Sony MDR-EX600: Impressions Thread
Aug 31, 2011 at 12:07 AM Post #916 of 1,311
well I just got my 3.5 mini to 3.5 mini cables made by Chris_Himself, and let me tell you they are sweet, he does awesome work!!!

and when I added an all silver one that I'm using as a go between, between my GS Voyager and the ZO, and it's making a BIG difference in the sound with the 600's,

I had ALOT of detail, and a huge soundstage before, along with some very well managed sibilance and the harsh mids, but now with the silver mini to mini, it has improved the soundstage, instrument placement and detail by 20%!! holy smokes, and the sibilance is now different? its still there albiet very limited, but it now seems even more enjoyable? go figure,

the setup for my rig is the following

iPod classic 7th gen. (with the EQ. set to treble reducer)>silver LOD>GS Voyager (with the contour switch off)>silver mini to mini>ZO (set low)>Sony EX600's (with Head-Directs modded large Bi flange tips)===Heavenly Bliss

On the subject, I emailed Zo the other day and they're going to let me know the pre-order date for the V2 - This wait and the Fiio X3 wait is absolutely killing me!

RE-262's came today, sad to say I prefer them to the 600's...which isn't a good thing saying the 262's fill the gap between the GR07's and the RE-0.
EX600's are kind of like the GR07's sibilant sister. Hmmm :p

I'll give them another week and see how much use they get.

Hey Varley,

congrats! and enjoy them, other than needing some play time to warm them up, and get to that sweet spot! they are basically wash and wear, IEM's? well at least the basic part, DON'T wash them, as that won't improve them hardly at all, plus it takes forever to dry them out, go figure, lol,

I'm not surprised, they are very nice, and the mids are like deep fried butter sticks, simply delicious, nothing like the 600's, and if I wasn't such a bass head, and if I hadn't started out hearing those before hearing the 600's, hhmmm, who knows what I'd be listening with right now?

but they are much more easier to deal with, hardly any work at all, other then giving them some initial play time, and then whala, your great to go!!! as oposed to the 600's, which take more work to get to that sweet spot!

and from what I've been hearing they pair very well with the ZO! oops sorry don't mean to to be hitting below the ZO, lol,

anyways

, the next round of tunes is on me, lol

and when you do hold on to your socks, cuz you won't be in kansas any more, welcome to ZOland!

and from what Digizoid is saying it will be kept very very close to the cost of what the original sold for! which is great news!

:\ Don't know if it's just me but after about a week and a half of owning these things, it felt like they started to loose their beauty.

Bass seemed decidedly less (in large quantities less) than when I had first got them. After a couple days of fiddling with them, I realized that the M sized tips I normally use have shaped my ear larger. They no longer make my ears a bit sore after a couple hours of continued use.

This is a bit of a downside however though as these (for me at least) seem to be very sensitive as to how far in my ear canal they are. As of now, when they are pushed in as far as they can go, their bass is noticeably shallow, and rather extremely depressing. However, placed gently in my ear so they are inserted just enough that there's a seal, the beautiful bass (with bass boosting EQ of course) comes back to life and drowns my ears and impedes my perception of breathing as it should :p

Has anyone else had the ear insertion depth issue with these before?

I'm gonna try some larger tips and report back~

Edit: Hmm maybe shallow isn't the right word, but I wanna say it is. I really can't pinpoint what the sound difference is tbh, but I can tell that the M tips with a shallow seal sound so much more fun and desirable than a deep seal... Can't figure out why, and what changes in the sound quality.... This bothers me...

Edit2: Seriously... What the ****. The L size fits me fine now (it didn't before). All the bass is there at least, and I can't shove them in my ears too deep so that's a plus, but then WHY DON'T I LIKE THEM?
mad.gif
They sound too warm? Maybe? They also seem to narrow the soundstage a tad... Things seem more open and equal on the lower end with the M tips. Now I feel stupid because I don't know if preconceptions are leading me to think the M tips are better than the L tips... I'm really confused right now... No clue why I think the M tips are better even though the L tips provide a better universal fit in my ears...

How we interpret sound can be affected by psychological stimuli and this aspect is sometimes overlooked. The tips shouldn't sound different, but insertion depth will. I'd recommend not listening to them for a few days, then come back to them with the large tips and a fresh perspective.
