Oh boy, i just wish they didn't cost like 2100$ here...Trying to trade my custom made grado's+cash for a pair now. Noone seems to be biting though.
I used to have the D2000 and just out of curiosity, i know the D2k have one of the most linear sound reproductions amongst hifi headphones, but hoes the bass and sub-bass response of the D2k, D5k and D7k compare? From what i've heard here i get the impression that the D5k has a bit more forwards mids that D2k and a slight bit more bass and the D7k has many of the same properties but more refined and controlled.
Thoughts?

Having both, here is how the D2K and D7K compare:

Highs: Both have slight sibilance, the D7000 a bit less so.
Mids: Both are recessed, the D7000 not as much. Both have some upper midrange congestion.
Lows: D2000 is a bit muddy and overpowers the already recessed mids sometimes,. the D7000 is tighter and a bit more impactful.
Soundstage: D7000 is significantly larger, though still not near open cans.
Transparency: D7K reaches quite a bit deeper, though still not as well as open cans.
Comfort: My D2000's pads are thicker than my D7k's, not sure why, but that made them slightly more comfy.

Very strange that they cost $2100 there. But that's obviously absolutely not worth it.

Thanks a lot for the response, the taxes are murder here...Then again there's obviously a good reason for that. Anyhow it would be great to hear your thoughts on this, I am going to spend 4-600$ on a new rig as i just sold my current one. Heres what it'll be, one of the following:
Possibility a:
Markl modded AH-D2000 with black oak cups, balanced pure silver cable, iBasso PB2

Possibility b:
Markl modded AH-D5000 or 7000 depending on what i can get a hold of, most likely D5000...no amp or accessories except for the headphone output from my home stereo but nothing on the go, which i often am.

Which one would be the best way to spend the money do you think? Keep in mind that with the PB2 id be able to use the balanced output from my DacMagic when I'm home otherwise my sources are a iPhone 4 on the go and the PC at home, rig a) would be able to benefit from both whereas "rig" b) would just have to make up for it itself...
In both cases i would obviously upgrade the missing parts over time (switch the D2k for a 7k in rig a) or get amp and so on for rig b)) but that will take a very long time on my student job...So it has to be able to work on its own until then

None of the Denon line is very portable. If you're looking for something portable, you're kind of in the wrong place already (IMO).

The out on your home receiver should be more than enough to kick out the jams in any of the Denon line.

So I guess I'd pick option b.

I had the D2000 for a while before my current rig and loved it, just decided to try something new, but it didn't fit all my needs so i want to return to Denon with full force. For portability I don't expect to use the Denons much, but for my custom IEM and old Pioneers as well an amp would be nice but the main thing for me is which of the above would work the best - would a D7000 be able to function decently without an amp? Or more specificly beat a woodied, fully modded and recabled D2000 running off one of the best portable balanced amps?

Just a sidenote: Are the cups interchangeable in the entire AH-D range? As in, would a pair of cups made for D2k fit D7k and the other way around?

I used to take my D5k when I was in college. Granted it was a little big but it's not something like the LCD-2 that you can't take around.

Yes they are interchangeable. All the Denon headphones are the same but for a few small changes in the drivers and a more luxurious look on the D7k.

Just found out too about the cups) because if i start out with the D2000 setup wich is likely unless my listen to all the phones tomorrow completely alters my impression of them, then it would be frustrating to have made custom wooden cups which are rendered useless when i upgrade the phone :p
Too bad i cant get to hear the two setups before deciding, just the stock phones vs. eachother possibly through the Argon HA1 amp the store has...An i can allready guess that the 7k most likely will trash the others - but i might just be suprised...

Having owned both the D2k and D5k, the D7k is just marginally better at best. It's upto you if it's worth the extra cost for minimal improvements. Some people feel the D7k is a significant improvement so you may have to hear and be the judge.

IMO the D5000 is the step child of the bunch. It uses the same drivers as the D2000, so the D2000 could theoretically be beefed up to its level. The D7000 uses different drivers that makes them much better (at least to my ears).
