Just want to disagree with the recommendations of DT990 and Denon D2000.
Both have a relatively slow bass which creates a nice and realistic decay with instrumental music. However, with your prioritised music I'd definitely want fast bass. Your best bet still remains Ultrasone. Most of them sound great unamped, too. Most popular models around here are HFI-580/780 and PRO 750/900.

I think the DT990 sounds especially bad with Electronica and Hip-Hop/Rap. An emphasized bass does not mean that it plays well with bass heavy genres. I'm selling my Beyerdynamics because I think they only do well with instrumental music.

Interesting to get a fresh perspective. So what would you go for out out of the Ultrasone line-up. The pro 900 is a bit out of my price range but the others are cool. I was hearing all these big things about Ultrasone for bass, and consequently hip hop and electro music, so I got the DJ1 Pro. Thought it stood out more than the HFI-range and would have more bass being a dj phone. I got a faulty pair though and was pretty gutted. No bass presence and the sound sounded like it was being muffled, like the cable wasn't plugged in.

Kinda lost my initial love for ultrasone with that and started thinking of alternatives like the HD-25-1ii. Not a basshead phone exactly but its pretty well respected across the board. I see you have tested it? Does it measure up to your HFI-780?

If you didn't like the looks of the D1100, I'd be suprised if you preferred the HD25.

That said, if you can afford it you could buy some customized ones from here...http://www.customcans.co.uk/ or get the Adidas branded ones.

On the bass side, they do have good punch in the bass but they are neither bass light or bass heavy IMO.

True, true. But it was they way the d1100 looked on the head that put me off, not the finish. And yeah, I am in communication with JFunk about getting some custom HD-25s. Would an amp help them get bass heavy?

From what I've seen when researching my own recent purchase, the HFI-580 is supposed to be the one with more prominent bass. The 780 seems to generally be reviewed as emphasizing treble more (some complain it's too much so), and it sounds like the Pros don't focus much on the bass as much, either (more neutral, I think I recall). The DJ1 is supposedly either exactly the same as or nearly the same as the 580 (depends on who you ask, nobody knows beyond a shadow of a doubt, but they're very close at the least). So if you liked the look of the DJ1 Pro but wanted more bass in an Ultrasone, then the DJ1 would be the one to try out.

I've got a 580 and am pleased with them, but I wouldn't necessarily call them basshead 'phones myself. They definitely seem to have fairly tight bass (I prefer quality over quantity, but don't like weak bass either); I have varied musical taste and haven't had much complaints with them on anything, other than at times the mids seem like they can be a little distant for me (not bad, just slightly underemphasized). But I can hear quite a bit of difference in sound quality across the various songs in my collection, so it's hard to say if it's an issue with the headphones or just the particular songs in question (e.g., mastering).

I've tested my friend's HFI-580 and my HFI-780 side by side. The 580 has a little bit more bass but the 780 has better and more detailed highs. Also, the soundstage of the 580 is closer and it seems farther away with the 780.
As the 580 bass hump is bigger, the subbass seems better in relation with the 780, but I might only be due to relativity.

Personally I prefer the 780. It seeks your attention and wants you to focus to search for details while the 580 jumps in your face and says 'this is what you get!'
However, the overall sound is very similar. So take whichever you can find the better deal for.

As for the HD-25 II, coming from Ultrasone, I didn't like it at all. In comparison, the bass of the Sennheiser is boomy instead of punchy and the soundstage is very crowded. The presentation was dark and warm and laid back. The highs were too soft.
However, my ears really prefer Ultrasone and it's a matter of adjusting. The HD-25 II is not bad, just something I personally could not get into.
I want energy! :)

Thanks for the comparison from your experience. What I keep remembering from 780 impressions is the whole "omg teh bright!!!!1one", but as everyone's ears and tastes are different, it's always hard to tell when it's people who don't like treble and when it's the headphones emphasizing that range excessively. Or a little of both.

Certainly didn't help my propensity to research things to death prior to a purchase.

Soundstage does feel fairly close in, and the 580 is moderately forward; it's a fairly intimate experience.

i just purchased the adidas version of the hd-25's, and theyre are very high quality headphones.  you could throw them at a wall and they would not break. extremely durable. also, unlike the beats, the plastic is not a grease-magnet. but as far as the sound quality, my experience is that it is an extremely balanced headphone.  the bass is punchy to me, but to each his own.  honestly, my only complaint about them is that theyre are uncomfortable to wear with glasses. i cant go 1 hour with glasses on. but theyre fine if you dont need glasses.
