Earsonics sm3 V2
May 4, 2011 at 9:10 AM Post #46 of 1,167
This would be awesome.  I wonder if it applies to those who bought from soundearphones.com (as I did) or the earsonic.com site directly.

Ordered my sm3 v1 just 1 week ago just waiting for customs to clear them.  I wonder if I can get free upgrade.  Now that would be awesome.

Should I email Franck directly?

According to Franck, if SM3 V1s were purchased before February 1st, the cost to 'upgrade to V2' is 30€. If after, then upgrade is free.

Also, separate from the cost to upgrade, you would need to shell out an additional 37€ for the new cable. Goes without saying that you would also need to ship your V1 to them.

I'm not sure if the above quotes are with/without tax, but I intend on sending mine in as the angular housings really hurt my ears yet I love their sound too much to get them re-shelled to customs.

Hope the above info helps some people

I dont think so, since the normal SM3 are quite cheaper than the V2.

Anyways, I'll probably be trying to upgrade mine, since they need repair(fell apart 2 months ago, but I've been using anyway).

If there are reports of any sonic improvements whatsoever over the original SM3 I have, I'm ordering right away! I would also like it in clear though like the v1.

Cool to see that Earsonics has taken the community's suggestions to heart though.

Do we know if the upgrade option are for ones only bought within the earsonics website? Because if it also includes those purchses from Sound Earphones, I'm all over it.

Yes, I believe.

Asked them yesterday and here is the reply from EarSonics:

"You can make an upgrade on your SM of the version V1 to the version V2.
For that, you just have to send back to us your earphone SM and to make an order on our online shop of a new cable ( cable EM ) and a Maintenance and Modification Offer ( in the section Accessories )."

Received confirmation from Earsonics that my warranty/repair can be upgraded as well I just have to buy the cable. So will be sending mine in this week. Will have to go by memory but will post thoughts about whether they are sonically changed when I get mine back.

Wow, great news. I may go that route as well. But will wait until dweaver and a couple others offer sonic observations.

Could you write here the actual question you posed them with? Thanks!

Can you do the upgrade through their vendor sites?

The only thing I don't like about the v2 is the cable guides and the fact that now you cannot easily tell left from right piece, as both are black. I also hope they fixed the cable slider and the carrying case.

Any idea what connectors are used? Are these the same as Westone's or JH's?

Just got confirmation from Michael of SoundEarphones that there won't be free upgrades to v2 (regardless of when a v1 was purchased). Only a discounted upgrade fee, plus cable.

sm3 is 17 ohm, the sm3 v2 is 34 ohm, either the drivers are different now or the X-over is a different design.

Another email update from Franck. According to him, the two versions have the "same sound."

Hmmm, I sure hope that they sound the same, being my favorite IEMs and all. Sometimes a few Ohm up or down can make a world of difference with multi-armature IEMs with crossovers.

Was so close to putting my order though I'll be overseas from 25th of may onwards and it would suck if it arrived after may 25th as they would return it back to soundearphones THEN i would have to pay for shipping AGAIN -.-
