Adding a 75ohm adapter to ER4S really doesn't do much.
 
 

  Here is how it looks with a ER4
 

Red is ER4P, Blue is ER4P with 75ohm adapter (= ER4S), and grey is ER4S + 75ohm (or in this case, ER4P with two 75ohm adapter).
 

Here is how they look when re-centered on 1kHz - you can see that the curve on ER4S and ER4S + 75ohm are almost identical. In fact, I have also measured ER4S + 175ohm and the result is more or less similar to to ER4S as well. That means there is little reason why you want to use more than one 75ohm adapter as the change in FR curve is minimum at best.

Scored a pair of used ER4 on eBay for less than $100 and that's a steal IMO. The cable and filter are both goner, but I really only need the working earpieces to rebuild the ER4 back, since I have all the spare parts. Good days!

I need to know if the diff is worth the purchase or if the ER4 will stand me just fine.

I don't know it's 20 or 25 (title says 20, description says 25) but in either case, it's good. If you're looking for sound between S and P like me, you can give it a try.

A few pages back I was complaining about the fact that two sets of ER4's have broken on me within the past year and a half. Well, I have another update. Yet ANOTHER set of ER4's has broken, this one after only 1 month of use. This is extremely frustrating and disappointing. With this latest pair, I have been EXTREMELY careful, only laying them down very gently, always putting them on and taking them off very carefully, yet after only 1 month of use, I have started to experience the same problem as I experienced with the other two sets. One piece starts to produce a buzzing sound at certain frequencies.

I now have 3 broken etymotic earpieces, all of which produce a buzzing sound at certain frequencies. 

I should say it's not really 3 sets that have broken, but 3 earpieces. Each time it only happens with one piece, so when the first two pairs broke, I put the two working pieces together into a working set. Now this set is broken.

There is something really weird going on here. I absolutely LOVE these earphones, but I can't afford to buy another set every few months. I am going to write to etymotic and see if they can give me any ideas about what might be going wrong. 

Is it possible that, as clear and transparent as these are, they just can't handle certain frequencies in high resolution digital files? I listen to a lot of vinyl rips, all of which are DIY audio files made by DIY vinyl rippers, so maybe there is something in the (lack of) audio processing that is causing this?

Is it possible that aftermarket cables are causing this? I am pretty sure I have been using an aftermarket cable with awwan adapters on all 3 sets that broke.
 
Could it be due to loudness? I listen to my stuff pretty loud.

Could it be a combination? Vinyl rips with a lot of high frequency content + aftermarket cable + loud amplification?

I am so frustrated and so torn right now. I want to buy another set, but this last one only lasted a month, so naturally I'm hesitant.

Anyone have ideas?

I'll follow up with etymotic and see what they say. If anything, they ought to be curious how something like this can keep happening.

Wow sorry to hear that. It definitely seems outside the norm. I've never had a pair break on me in about 4 years, and I wear mine to the gym about 4-5 times a week. Not at all careful with them. But, I'm also using the stock cable.

The aftermarket adapters are 99% likely the cause imo. How do the pins look when you take off the adapter? Are the pins separating? Are they missing any piece of the metal tip on the end of the pin? Does the issue persist if you reinstall the stock cable?

If you get another pair I would highly recommend using the stock cable and cinching it for easy over-the-ear wear. Completely eliminates microphonics for me. They are the best running pair of earphones I've ever had.
