I went this route.  It has been an upgrade in every aspect: comfort and sound quality.  Just make sure to get a good amp to power it, sometime.

I've got the Xonar Essence (for now!), I know that it can power them but I also realize it won't squeeze everything out of them but I'll have to settle for that due to limited amount of money I've got.
I was also thinking about HD 650 but after reading that they are a bit more "dark"/"soft" I decided to look more at the HD 600 which supposedly sound almost the same as HD 595 but better in all aspects.
 
But I also wonder how much of a better sound am I looking here? Because I don't feel like shelling out 330€ just for a minor upgrade =/

I actually did exactly what you're doing except I had the HD555 (foam mod) and not the 595. I have an Asgard on it's way sometime this week but now, I'm just running them out of the Essence STX (they sound great out of this so far). The 600 sounds much better than the 555 and easily worth the $300 I spent on em. However, I ended up keeping my HD555 as well. I play a lot of games and for FPS games, the HD600 just doesn't do it for me. I REALLY don't know if that's important or not. But for everything else, the HD600 is thus far my favorite pair.

One thing to consider when going from the HD595 to the HD600, is the HD600 is a bit more relaxed(not as much as the HD650) compared to the more forward HD595.  Instead of the upper-mid, lower treble emphasis of the HD595, you have a much more balanced frequency response in the HD600 as well as much better bass, more detail retrieval and better overall refinement.
 
With the Xonar, you should still hear sizable improvement in the HD600.

I only need them for music (I do play games from time to time but I don't give much attention for them), I don't know if I'll keep the 595's I still really like them, maybe I end up selling them and put the money towards a better amp or something.

I read something similar before, the thing I'm after the most is the detail, a bit better bass (I miss the punch with the HD 595). I mostly listen to rock, alternative rock, indie, hard rock etc. how will the HD 600 do in that department? My guess is that should be better because of the better detail they give and like you said refinement.
I did a bit more reading about the 650's but I really think they aren't for me, I don't like the "dark" sound everyone is talking about.

Proud owner of the HD600 now, my amp is coming tomorrow (objective 2), but it already sounds like the best thing I've put on my head. I still love my V-moda m-80s but these are damn amazing. All I'm using is the m-audio fast track as a dac/amp so it isn't very powerful. Can't wait till the amp tomorrow!

Does burn in or whatever it's called really make headphones better or does it just have psychological effects and really doesn't help at all?  And if it does make headphones better how many hours would it take for the HD600?

Burn in is a combination of psychological factors and a physical change to the drivers. So far as the hd600 is concerned specifically, I didn't notice much of a burn in change. Take note, Psychological brain burn in might not exist for me since I have already owned more than one hd600 and I already know their sound.

I've read these articles and they don't really mean much since they show that the drivers do randomly change a little bit with time but it cannot be proven if this was just due to what was captured in the moving display with fluctuating scribbles in FR or if the drivers did actually change a little. Also, there is no way of proving whether these little changes are audible to everyone.

Funny, "burn-in" always improves the sound. Just like $200 cable "upgrades" always sound better than the stock cables.

My experience says that burn in is psychological. Long ago, I thought my earphones change a bit but interestingly enough, it went back to its original standing. The HD600 I have now doesn't change sonically at all from the moment it's brand new.

I agree. If the hd600 changed, it is either due to the pads getting flatter with age or just that it changed very little that I didn't notice it at all.

I've noticed in the two months I've had the HD600 an annoying squeak in the left part of the headband. Every time the cup rotates on the small swivel, it's emits a small squeak. Is there something I can do to fix it or is buying a new headband the only way to remedy it? I can overlook it but it's still something I'd love to get fixed.
