The LOD audio output on the iPhone is probably the same signal as the earphone connection. It is on the iPod. The Apple device's amp output feeds both outputs. So the question whether to use a LOD or not would be just a matter of preference on which physical connection you want to use.

The question is whether it is a line level signal or not.
