many people pair beyers with the Asus, from experience dont pair a Denon with it, and I have heard of people with k701 complaining about not getting enough power from the stx.

To sum up that link: Tool, Nine Inch Nails, and experimental rock are my most listened to bands, so I listen to a wide variety of instruments and overlayed sounds. I'm primarily a high bass/high treble fan, but I would like a pair of headphones that let you hear and pick out each instrument and won't drown out or distort vocals or certain frequencies. I would prefer accuracy opposed to banging/over-bearing distorted bass and piercing headache highs, if that makes any sense. For example, in a car I would prefer a good pair of 6x9s plus a pair of 10" subs over a set of banging 12" subs.

Sorry if that sounds too specific. I prefer more bass/treble compared to mids, but don't want to totally drown out or distort any frequency. I'm not trying to necessarily limit or disqualify certain headphones if they actually sound really good. I would be open to a pair that focus on mids, as long as they can be adjusted with and EQ.
 
Right now I'm debating between Sony MDR-V6 (most reviews I've read say they sound identical to or better than the 7506 at a cheaper price), Marshall Major, Sennheiser HD-280, and Grado S80i. The Sony MDR-V6 are cheaper than the other 3. Can anybody tell me if those other 3 choices are that much better than the MDR-V6, and which one (if any) you would go with? Or am I way off base and should be looking at something completely different?

Well the best pair below $100 for music is probably the AKG K242HD at its current street price, but it needs an amp, or a receiver but some kind of power source, and its not exactly portable or built like a tank, but the sound about matches my Denon D2000 even in signature. I cant comment on your other suggestions, since i dont own them, but the MDR-V6 has a good reputation, more for monitoring though, so it may be analytical, well the AKG is analytical aswell.

My budget is a max of $100 and I can't find the AKG under $150, and I really don't have the budget for an amp on top of it. And I understand you do get what you pay for, I was just wanting to get the best bang for my buck. It doesn't matter what you're buying, there's always something out there for a given price that is much better than another item at the equivalent price.
 
For instance, I really think the Sony MDR-V6 which I can get for $78 on Amazon is better than a lot of headphones at or slightly above $100. You can actually find the V6 around $50 on a few websites, but I don't know if I trust them. I think I'm going to order the V6 from Amazon. If somebody thinks I'm making a big mistake, please let me know.

@ SpiralOut, checkout either he Ultrasone DJ1 or HFI 580. Same headphone, prices seem to fluctuate quite a bit between the two.

The K701 are really bass lacking unless amped really well...and even then, well they are bass lacking. You may like the DT880 in your situation. They are fun, fairly easy to amp and have a great soundstage for music. Personally, though I'm a Sennheiser guy. I adore my HD600. You may really like the HD598 for movies, too; it is not as rigorous on amping either, sounding fine unamped.

Hard to know what look you're going for.
 
Of the two cans you mentioned the AT has stronger bass delivered in a "V" shaped EQ.  It formerly went for about $100 and now goes for about $150.
 
The Shure provides a more balanced EQ and overall more accurate sound.  It formerly went for almost $200 and now goes for about $140.

The Beyer or Senns will give you the most bass.  All three are fairly neutral with the 650 a little less so than the other two.

Whoops, I keep forgetting differences in exchange rates, I paid the equivalent of $100 for them, but I imported from germany. I doubt your making a mistake, but after seeing another post, the CAL should also be considered.

Ok guys. I ordered HD598 as replacement for my older (and very bad..) HD201. I will leave E7 dac/amp to pair it with E9 which i plan to buy but now i will not have any portable amp.
Is there any alternatives for FiiO E1 as iPod mini amp for Senns CX300-II?
Maybe E5 will be better?

The Sennheiser HD558s are like the ATH-AD700, but with more bass.
And they are way under your budget.
 
I'm sure the Beyerdynamic DT880 Premium 600-Ohm will sound very nice.

Im looking for a new pair of cans... I listen to all different kinds of electronic music, metal,  progrock, instrumental, jazz, singersongwriter, folk, indie,  but mostly metal and ambient.  My price range is 350-400, maybe a lil more or less.  I am going to  be running them though a fiio E17 but i may purchase a little dot soon or whatever may complement the headphones best.  Im looking for a neutral sound.  Im not a bass head but I do like bass but not to be distracting.  Ive heard grados are great for heavier music, but I also would like a nice soundstage for all the ambient and electronic I listen to, so If any of you could help me out that would be GREAT.... o yea and so far ive been revolving around these... O yea and something that I dont need to buy a 300 dollar amp to drive!
