MDR 1R vs MDRMA900 vs Fidelio L1 I was just wondering which is better overall. The ma900 costs $200 while the 1r costs $300 and the l1 costs $300 also.

When I say better, I mean best for most genres except country or opera.

I already know which are open or semi-open and all the other details, I'm only interested on sound quality.

I like:
Rap, R&B, JRock/Pop, Classical/OST

Thanks in advance!

I'd look into

Shure SRH-840
Shure SRH-940
Brainwavz HM5 (or FA-003, same thing)
KRK KNS 8400 (These are pretty bass-light, not sure if that would suit you)
AKG K167 Tiesto
AKG K701/702
Beyerdynamic DT880 (Pro edition)
Sony MDR 7506
Sennheiser HD380 Pro

Wow, that's a lot :)
I'll do some research.

I think you're right. They did get uncomfortable on my ears pretty quickly, but maybe that's something that I can overlook since I really do love the sound. I'd still love to heard how an audiophile would describe them for my own education. I means they would be described as neutral at this point, right?

lol... I've heard that the Sennheiser Momentums has a slight bass increase I think, but as neutral as you can get compared to its competitors. Supposedly, the K550 does have less bass and more treble and a larger sound stage. The Momentums are supposed to be very technical, more bass than the K550 but less bass than the Sony MDR-1R & V-moda M100. The MDR-1R & M100 is often described as colored/fun sounding, but the Momentums usually gets more characterized as technical, balanced, and smooth. The Momentums aren't as neutral as headphones geared for studio monitoring, but why would it even matter if you really like the sound quality/sound signature. Don't worry about labels man & just enjoy your music.

How are the Beyerdynamic DTX series of headphones? DTX710, 910 etc..

Say DTX910 vs. my HA-RX700's?

Never heard them.  Don't remember any discussion about them here either.  Fact is that there are a great many $30 to $60 cans that don't generate too much interest.

Alright, so the following are on my list of cans to try this weekend:
  1. Shure SRH940
  2. AKG K550
  3. Sony MDR-V6
  4. Beyerdynamic DT 770

The Sony is on there, but I'm a little hesitant that a $65 headphone is going to deliver what I'm looking for. Still, no color lines, right? I've also put the DT 770 on there just because I'm interested in the comparison. It's probably not what I'm looking for at all, but I figure I should expose my ears to everything I can to refine my tastes. If anyone can think of any other decently closed-back, neutral, and relatively airy cans to try, I'm all ears.

Alright, I just came back from trying the K550 and I really disliked them. When the highs and the treble hit, it was uncomfortable. They reminded me of a highly degraded Q701 (a can i really like). I'm not sure that's what I'm going for now.

I tried several others while I was out, one of them being the Sennheiser Momentum. I'm a little embarrassed to say I absolutely fell in love with the sound from them. The problem is I have no idea what that means. I thought I was looking for a neutral headphone, but maybe not? I have no idea how to classify the Momentum, but that's what I'm looking for. So why not just get the Momentums and be happy? I'll tell you I was close to, but a couple things stopped me. The ear cups are SOO small, the leather heated my ears quickly, the low impedence makes me worry about whether or not to amp them (they sounded great both unamped and with a FiiO E07K), and they have an on-line mic (takes away from the seriousness to me).

So a couple of questions. I know how it sounds to me, but how would an audiophile describe the Momentum's sound? What other cans can I look at that replicate this sound? When you see low impedence from a headphone like that, what are your thoughts on ampping?

The Momentum is not made for audiophiles.  That's who the Amperior is designed for.  But it's OK to like the sound signature of the Momentum.  Liking a sonically colored headphone is fine; at least if its a good one like the Momentum.  The comfort issue is probably much more important with regard to whether or not they are the can for you.

Hi there

Bought a pair of 250 Ohm Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros yesterday. I told the shop that I would be using them for personal use (gaming, listening to music etc) and told them I'd be powering them off the sound card on my computer so they advised the 250 version. However I am having trouble getting the sound card to work with my computer. If I continue to struggle I will look to go down the portable amp route instead.

So at this point I have two questions:

1) Was the shop right in recommending me the 250 ohms with regards to what they will be used for?
2) If I do decide to get a portable amp, what one should I go for? Will something like the FiiO E06 be okay?

Thanks

Anyone?

#1 depends on your sound card.  However, most that are any good (and come with an amping feature) should be able to push a 250 Ohm can like the DT 770 Pro.
If you want more details, ask on the computer audio section of the forum.

Can't help you with your portable amp question.  If you don't get an answer here, there is a forum section covering portable amps.

Yeah the sound card comes with an in-built amp I just sadly can't get it to work with my computer.

Thanks for the heads up on the portable amps section.

I don't know much about your amp, other than it is the entry level of that line.

Assuming it can push the 250 Ohm DT 880 Pro and you are OK with semi-open cans, it is your best choice from you list.

If you want a close can, it's difficult to beat the sound of a SRH 940.

Hello everyone!
I'm very new to the "audiophile" world and I need some help from you guys in choosing my first pair of good headphones.

I have a budget of around $240 and I will be using these headphones mostly for gaming but also music, movies, etc. Also noise isolation is NOT important to me AT ALL.

So far I've come up with the HD 598 with a clip on mic.

Are there any better headphones for this price? (The HD fall into the budget because they are $222 at amazon)

P.S. (Not a big fan of too much bass)

So SRH 940 vs DT 880/250 ? Pretty tough decision. Well I have a lot of time to think about that, thank you for suggestion.

Hi AJ, I would also look into the Beyerdynamic range as they are normally good with gaming, DT770 would be a good choice.
