The O2 is in-between portable and a desktop amp. The standard build has rechargeable batteries and a power adapter, so it can be taken with you. However, it is about 3"x5"x1.5" so it is a little big for being portable, but also small for being a desktop amp. Very good amp nonetheless.
The Shure 940 is easy to drive to a loud volume, but the increased power from an amp gives the bass much better quality. If you went with the Shure 940, seeing how you have the budget for an amp, I would recommend you get one to use the Shures to their full potential.
I will either be using my laptop or Sony mp3 player(which is a little old so I'm pretty sure I need an amp for it). I can get that O2 aswell, however I always thought it was a desktop amp. So are you saying I won't miss much without an amp for the Shure 940?
