I just called Sennheiser UK service centre to ask if the ie 8i cable would work the ie 8 and the answer was no because the wiring is different. I'm a little confused with their explanation as it looks like a simple cable swap and that the same earpiece/drivers are used for both models with the exception of the microphone.

Can anyone who has done this cable swap know if it would work?

I figured I could have been lied by their manager and engineer who wanted to make a quick buck out of me. The cable is a little pricey but I wouldn't mind spending 40 quid instead of a few hundred on a new handset which offers identical performance.

The cable could be bought from here -

Shure's headphones allows the user to swap the cable for their handset cables by paying extra for them. Wouldn't it be the same concept?

And I was naively assuming all along that it's just going to be a simple swapping of the cables.

Different wiring? Sure, but not on drivers side - only on jack side.

Just to let you all know, we are waiting for our first batch of these cables to arrive from Sennheiser Germany, then we can test this out and work out whther these cables can be retro fitted to the IE8.

Kind regards

Just a little update from the marketing department at Sennheiser:
The non-EAC products (e.g. IE 8) that we have today can not be upgraded to EAC versions as there is no such detachable cable with Smart Remote sold as an accessory.
Any thoughts?

I tested a friends IE8 with the my new IE8i cable and as we suspected it works perfectly.

The IE8i cable isn't as nice as the standard IE8 cable it is thinner and has some cable memory
mine has kinks from the tight winding in the supplied case.  Also the neck cinch is useless as the iPhone remote control limits the distance you can slide the cinch.

I am quite curious about how to wear IE8i, from the back of ears?

The remote/mic is quite near to the drivers on the pictures, if wearing IE8i like IE8 the mic/remote might just behind the ears.

Thanks. That's the best news I heard all day. This really would help current IE8 customers upgrade their cables for the mike/

Why would Sennheiser deny that it would work is unbelievable beyond me.
