Hello Bill, how did you manage the extra holes? Did you use some sort of "stop" on your drill press to avoid reaching the diaphragm??

The stop on the drill press would have been a good precaution but I just threw caution to the wind.  After practicing with a dead driver, I went by feel.  With the drill press, you can feel when you're pressing through.  I used that to tell me what my eyes couldn't.  I put the holes closer to the magnet than the outside radius, just in case that sense of feel wasn't as fine-tuned as I'd imagined.  Thankfully, I got lucky and didn't sneeze.  The results were surprising.  I don't know how more holes can make the sound seem more HD800 transparent but maybe it's the smoothing of some of those spikes in the raw.  Whatever it is, I actually feel like it opened up the soundstage a little more.  On CSNY's "Ohio," the "chirps" in the electric-guitar solo have a little more echo/reverb.  On the Main Title from Star Wars, the trumpet blasts are crisper.  On KISS's "Beth," I noticed the oboes for the first time.  The sax on Elvis Presley's "Return to Sender" is worth the whole song.  Not every song is the better for it.  The Cars' "Bye Bye Love" is already a thumping punch in the face.  Paula Abdul's "Rush, Rush" is almost as heavy on the bass but seems to improve with it - and the slight dub of the crickets in the Keanu-Reeves-As-James-Dean comes through clearer (too bad these two had to age).  Steely Dan's "Time Out of Mind" has a surprisingly jarring bass beat but the real surprise is the crispness of the vocals and brass. The brass on Dizzy Gillespie's "Man from Monterey" are so textured I could eat it with dip.  Thus far, it looks like something I'd want to keep.

Well I had a bad day of modding. After cutting 5 Padauk shells, I realized the 1-5/8" 2-3/8" combo just leaves the walls too thin. I cracked all the shells inserting drivers, even after making the driver cavity bigger. Will be trying a 1.5", 2.5" combo next time. At least I only used a quarter of my Padauk and have all the other woods left. I just need to get better at finishing sanding. Might be investing in some sanding sealer to help that along.

In other good news I finally have a Beyer headband coming so hopefully that will be nice. And hopefully the rest of my recable supplies will arrive tomorrow so I can get that done. Should be some nice changes coming in the next few days. I can't wait.

can this be fixed????? :frowning2: looks like the coil detached itself from the wire as i was slowly pulling off the mylar. it also looks as if i made an indent on the mylar while i was venting the driver. why did i use a compass??!

could the mylar still be reused?

 please help :frowning2:

A voice coil falling out of the gap around the magnet is fixable.  A voice coil falling off the Mylar is fixable.  Snapped voice coil cables are another story.  If your wires are intact (and you've simply had the voice coil come off of the Mylar, that part can be glued back on.  Snapped wires are more difficult.

The bend in the Mylar is nothing.  That can be fixed in 30 seconds with the sticky side of a single piece of tape.

When you guys make these shell i don't think its necessary to have a slot all around the inside for the driver cup/tray, you only need like a ledge there all away around so the driver tray doesn't go too far in and screw up the cord. I my have missed something over the past few days but really its like overkill
to make these shell's too complicated. It will save you alot of time and aggravation to make these Grado's sing. If you don't understand what I'm saying PM me and I'll explain better hopefully.

eeek. the voice coil is definitely detached from the wire. i'm not certain what you mean by snapped, but the wires seem to be intact, just a little frayed on the edges.

here are more detail pics:

what do you think?
