JH Audio JH-3A

am I missing something?? where does it even say its portable? or is that on facebook?
I think more likely than being a sabre dac is for it to be a class D multichannel amp with digital input

of course it probably is portable and there doesnt seem to be a power cable, but all the same

interested, but not at that price. maybe when I feel its time to upgrade my JH13 i'll get a package deal then, I dont feel the upgrade to JH16 is needed from 13, i'll be waiting for the next upgrade. I wonder if after all that processing it still manages to be musical rather than just detailed. I dont like the idea of not being able to use the IEMs with anything else because this industry is changing so rapidly its not funny

it also appears you cant use it with anything else, so cant use with speakers or fullsize headphones or even as a source for something else; except maybe if you DIY some multichannel 3 way speakers

ha, I don't see the point of me getting the JH3-A when I can use the RSA Apache+DA11 combo to drive the customs in balanced mode....and at the same time be able to take the customs out for portable use!

The pricing is a little off for the existing customer base for JH Audio...

You mean I will be paying 1149+1099 for the 16 and amp combo as opposed to the new guy who gets a great deal at 1748? A whooping difference of 500 bucks?

This can't be right.... We as loyal customers should be getting the better end of the stick.I'd be interested to experiment with my 13s if JH was willing to consider revising the pricing.

Guys, look at the photos. This is obviously portable.

EDIT: At least, given it's size and the mRket, it seems counterintuitive that it wouldn't be. We will have confirmation soon I am sure.

On a different point, the griping has already begun but welcome to Head-fi. The only cerainty here is that "sorry about your wallet" will be Deja vu all over again, again and again. If the 3A lives up to its promise, do you think that buyers will get a guarantee that nothing better will be released shortly after?

I for one, itching to compare this gear with the Protector combo in balanced mode using two JH16s (one passive and one modded with the JH-3a active crossover).

Rather than going to the HifiMan route, I took Craig's suggestion and I ordered a Korg MR-1 DSD recorder yesterday.  Hopefully, I can make some quality DSD recordings straight off from my soon to arrive Modwright Platinum Truth Package modded Sony 9100ES SACD player.  Somehow, I don't think a Redbook-CD quality source is going to be truly capable to push the JH-3a, based on Jude's specs in a portable form factor.

This thing definitely made my morning, for sure.  Sorry about my wallet.

Great concept! I like this.
But I am a bit curious, if this active crossover is similar to bi-amping or multiple-amping in speaker audio, we need three separate wire pairs on each band. But the wire in the picture does not look that thick. Am I wrong?

I believe that a HiFiman 901 DAC  with support of SDXC card built-in in this JH3A will be a real killer combo.  Fang, do you hear me?

I think many JH13s and JH16s will be in the for sale section soon. :)

Possibly, but not mine.  Why would you sell it and then order another one modified?  Besides, one hates to break up a collection...:)  But seriously, I'd like to retain the flexibility of having a universally compatible JH16 Pro.  For example, I'm anxiously awaiting the pre-owned RSA Raptor headphone amp I've bought off of Mr.Sneis recently.  I've always wanted a quality bedside rig and I don't see any tubes hanging out of the JH-3A..

its more frugal to buy a new pair combo, than to lose out on portability and refit ... but $1800 ... what perfect timing!

sad i dont even have my 16s yet, oh well ill enjoi them till the reviews come out. get myself a new pair later before next years CJ11 ... looks awesome though. def very interested ... gotta save for a WHILE again. whats next a twag connector to this puppy ;P (am i kidding?)

Good question.  What I see is Mr. Sanborn@Whiplash working hard on a TWag prototype...

OK, Craig, you talked me into it.  Where do I sign up?  That amp prototype on Jude's picture is begging for the TWag touch.

Seriously? At what price point are people willing to say no?

Just to be clear. Does this mean that the JH13/16 has to be used with this amp if you go this route and will no longer be useful with any other amp or straight from a source? It's portable, but not exactly stick in your pocket portable like an imod with a small amp strapped to it.

An interesting comment.  I hear that every time from my PC-using friends when I upgrade my MacBook.  My usual answer is that it represents a superior value proposition to me, despite the higher initial purchase price.

With regards to the JH-3A, I'm willing to bet that Jerry Harvey knows what he's doing based on past history.  Details are scarce at the moment, but depending on the components used in the device, he may have priced this package quite reasonably if, indeed, it represents a "50%" improvement over current portable DAC/amp offerings.  When you do the math the JH13/16 Pro + a higher quality portable amp such as an RSA Protector costs about the same now.

I love the idea of an amp specially designed for the IEM and vice versa!! I don't know why others haven't done it before?   I can't wait to try this out at Canjam and am glad I held off on my purchase of customs until now :)

Pricing is a kick in the pants for existing owners, but for new dedicated sets the price doesn't seem that unreasonable.  After some reading it seems like there's a lot of real-world benefits that active crossovers should provide (at least in the speaker realm... though it would seem reasonable that everything other than power should be equally applicable).  I know my speakers can be bi-amped, so I may have to try and see if this makes any difference to my tin ears.

Since my JH16s are already on order, I plan on waiting a year or two for the reshrink/revision/whatever that they happened to have released at that point.  At the pace that JH seems to be going at releasing new hardware, keeping up will be as futile as trying to maintain 'bleeding edge' PC hardware.
