Which headphone is to YOU the most "balanced" sound signature wise?

Well, actually, what I meant is what sounds the most rightly balanced to YOUR ears. So it doesn't have to be "by the book" at all. For example, I mentioned ESW10JPN, and I recognize that going by the book, they're not really flat at all. But as I like my mids to be fairly forward, they sound most "balanced" to my ears. They've sort of become my reference point in which I judge balance in other headphones, which is ironic as they're by no means designed to be reference headphones.

k702 doesn't sound as balanced as, say, my dt880 even.
too much upper mid-range.
it's a good thing when listening to female vocals, but it's definitely not the most balanced can.

I have problem with the mids. the D5000 midrange sounds perfect to my ears and the HD650 mids sound too aggresive to my taste, although scientificaly they are more balanced than the D5000 "recessed" mids. those kind of recessed mids always sounded best to me,I guess I prefer the vocals to be more in the background and the instruments in front of them.

^x2. Of the decent headphones I've heard, the HF-1 is the most balanced. The wooden housing fixes all the problems of the SR225 (weak bass, bright signature). A very close second is Beyer DT250-250. These two are much more balanced to my ears than even SRH840 and D7000.

Thank you. That was very helpful.

I really need to A/B the HP1/2 & the DT48.. Erik compares them favorably in certain areas, but I would like to hear which is more balanced IMO..

I haven't heard a lot of headphones before, but I find my K 240 DF to be very well balanced. Good detail all around, with no exaggerated frequency ranges.

I recently bought the HD800 and was absolutely blown away by its balanced presentation. Never have I owned a headphone that actually resisted EQing. I've acquired the bad habit of thinking music sounds better if you give your cans a Mona Lisa Smile. To my utter amazement, my HD800s turned flat into the virtue everybody says it is. I've owned some nice headphones that revealed some nifty artifacts in the music, but the HD800s eclipsed anything I've ever heard before. I've never been much of a Sennheiser fan (Grado rules!) but these cans are undeniably fine.

This is true.. Erik has some very balanced headphones (IHO).. HP2/DT48e/240DF/HD800.. We share the same taste in many headphones, so his opinion means more then others.. I just need to get a HD800. Erik always says the sonics of flavored/colored headphones, while gets your immediate attention at first, grows old over time. To me balance also relates to transparency & neutrality.. But that's for another thread.

Grado cans and I have had a bad marriage. I've filed for divorce.

I'll be taking my HD600's to work when I get the HD800's. The HD600's are fabulously balanced. No EQ'ing required there either and at a hard to beat price at that.

Most balanced: HD800

Most Honorable Mention: T1 and K1000

Still very balanced and should not be forgotten: DT880/600, K70x, HD600, DT770/600, HD650

The K70x exhibit an annoying upper midrange smear that I always perceived as fracturing female vocals.

For me, the Ultrasone 750PRO (mine had the RAL re-cable) did female vocals with an almost frightening realism, unequaled by any other headphones I've tried to date.

I'll defer to the good Uncle's observation, too, and add to my list the UP-OCC re-cabled K501, amped by the Fitz-Maxxed Bada PH-12, as a balanced and eminently coherent listen, midcentricity notwithstanding. : )
