That's a hell of a lot cheaper than they are selling for here on headfi. I vote you buy the local x.

it's a used unit for 3 years, so.. might not be the "real cheap"

Hey people, I have had my W1000X (with L3000 pads) for years and sadly will have to send it in for repair soon as the connection at the cup-end is intermittent now.

In the meantime, I have relocated and left my Audio-Gd gear back in home country.

I will appreciate any recommendations for a suitable DAC/amp solution for these headphones around ~USD400 (~JPY50,000 and available in Japan). I listen to a wide range of music but recently its mainy female vocals acoustic and ballads.

My requirements are fairy basic:
1. takes USB DS/ASIO/WASAPI non-highres input from foobar2000 running on Windows 7
2. prefer a smaller footprint

Nice to haves will be:
1. can be hooked up to a matching set of bookshelf type speakers easiy
2. use-able in 110/120V and 230/240V (and 50Hz/60Hz) power outlet regions without any external transformers (a separate DC input, a separate USB power input, or with a internal AVR)
3. doesn't look like crap

I will try to find time to bring my headphones (with intermittent cables...) out to audition some solutions but my list is really short at the moment. Any help at all is much appreciated!

This little thing seems to fit my requirements well so far. Small, separate DC-in, built-in DAC, somewhat affordable, sufficient inputs/outputs options, and looks pretty cute.

I love the Matrix Mini-i with the W1000X (and other woddies for that matter).  I have the original version, which does not support changing voltage input.  But the new version appears to have solved this.

I would say to get the Audio-GD NFB-15, $270 + shipping ($40?)
Get the one that works with your local AC wall outlet, you can always get a power adapter if you move.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The Matrix Mini-i certainly looks interesting. The NFB-15 sounds like a good suggestion too but I might want to try something new because I had been using the NFB-2 with the C2.2 all along.

Actually I was expecting some suggestions from Japanese makers. Is my budget just too small? Or is it because the prices are just so inflated outside of Japan that most other people have not considered them?

Hi,

I'm going to Japan in August.
I made my decision to buy a W1000X (or Z if good deal) as I looked for a comfy closed back pair with good imaging/soundstage. Budget 400$. The W1000- series seemed to match my criterias. Plus I fell in love with the design of these cans.

Do you recommend me to wait and buy them in Japan as the prices are said to be lower in the origin country, or I can buy them via Pricejapan or waiting for a good occasion on Ebay ? Thanks.

I bought both of my W series audio technicas from Price Japan without any issues. Came brand new unopened and were pretty much half the price I would have paid in the UK.

Regarding the W1000X and comfort - I don't find the stock earpads as uncomfortable as others here, but the W5000 pads were definitely an upgrade in comfort and seal. Not everyone likes the fit of the 3-D wing headband. The headphones have a large sound/headstage for a closed back. But some people find them bright sounding.

I've not listened to the W1000Z. As you're going to Japan you may be able to try both out in the stores over there.

Thanks for the answer.
Currently price quotes for W1000X and Z are 380€ and 462€. The W1000Z is far from by budget. I'll look at the W1000X and trades in head-fi.

Now about amping, how do sound these cans unamped ? My only current amp/DAC is the Odac + O2.

The ODAC/O2 has more then enough power to drive the W1000X or (W1000Z).
Try to find used W1000X (eBay?).

I just ordered a pair of these as my open back sens are not domestically compatible, running from an Icon Audio HP 8
One question? Where can I get a really high quality case for my phones and mobile DAC's etc. not found anything that really fits with my gear. Always cheap looking and never that reconfigurable :frowning2:

So after meeting a member @234537 at the Cambridge, UK, HeadFi meet, I had to get myself a pair.  I'm a convert!

I have a Stax 507 setup but wanted to upgrade my Sen 580s and borrowed a friends 650's they were good, but not 'distinct' enough from the 580s IMHO to make a change.  However, the W1000 is an amazing phone for the collection.  Thank you HeadFi community for bringing it to my attention. I'm going to do the direct comparison between the 580 / 650 / W1000 and write it up but right now it's just great having this phone in the mix.

Driven right (Chod Hugo) it's a clean and engaging delight.

I'm hooked.
