Looking for another headphone to add to K601 and DT880

My two nicest headphones are the K601 and DT880. Both are similar, but the K601 has a wee bit more punch and highs that aren't quite as crystal as the DT880. I enjoy both headphones, but due to their similarities, I am itching to find something new. I don't go nuts buying headphones - I like to buy things that I will keep for a long time.

I want to buy another headphone, and I want it to have a different sound signature from the two headphones I already own.

I listen to mostly rock music - everything from heavy metal, speed metal (Megadeth), stoner rock (Kyuss), pop/rock (XTC), art rock (Roxy Music), mellow rock (Lloyd Cole), progressive rock (Yes). I use CDs and MP3s at VBR 256.

I do not want highs any brighter than the DT880, and I do not want anything that even remotely has recessed mids. Price should be <$500 US.

I plan to use it primarily paired with my HeadRoom Micro Stack (with the desktop module free upgrade). I use my computer's HD for MP3s and the CD-ROM drive for CDs. My PC is very quiet.

I've looked into: the Grado RS-2, but I am a little afraid of the highs; the Denon D2000; the Sennheiser HD650; Denon D5000. Open or closed doesn't really matter. I suppose if I couldn't make up my mind, I'd go closed, since the only closed phone I own is the DT770 (this phone is OK, but it doesn't thrill me, and I am thinking of selling it. I have had it for 3+ years).

Thanks.

Hoping to find something that doesn't need any modding.

My vote is for Grado, although you can hardly go wrong with a HD650 (or 600 or 580...)

Agreed!

Less than 5 minutes of your time and less than $5 on materials

Voiding the warranty a possibility?

I mean I've used the paper towels / cotton ball modification on my ATH-CK7, but that was totally non-invasive.

And those were "only" $79 earphones. lol

Forgive me for being a little cautious. What is this mod to which you refer, anyway? Now that you've piqued my interest...

For some reason, I can't help comparing this decision-making process to NFL general managers while they arrange their draft boards prior to draft day.

For me, the Grado is the high risk / high reward headphone. If I actually like the Grado sound, the headphones will go into my hall of fame.

The Senn HD650 is the safe pick. I know I won't be turned off by the sound signature, but will it be something that makes my eyes pop open and my mouth form a giant "o"?

Grado = Sam Bradford (franchise QB, or fragile-shouldered bust?)
Senn = Ndamukong Suh (instant starter, future all-pro?)

What about the Denons?

Well, I stole a 84 rated RT with A potential in the 6th round in my draft in Madden NFL 10

Tom Brady styles :p

Anyway, I wouldn't get the Senns tbh. It'll be more of a sidegrade tbh.

Heck, I can order from HeadRoom and return the Grados if I don't like them.

Oh-oh...

Or you could spend a little bit extra and get the RS1i's over the RS2's I'm sure your wallet will hate you but your ears will love you ;D
