SansaClip+ Rockbox Impressions thread
May 31, 2010 at 7:12 PM Post #301 of 1,093
Just ordered a clip+ 4GB.

Not sure if I'll rockbox it or not, at least it will play loseless.
Will use it mostly wile running. I'm getting more and more annoyed by the shuffles lack of loseless support. Finally I'll be able to listen to all my music:)

rockbox not for me?

now that the software seems to be more or less stable, i went ahead and tried it on my clip+. it is pretty neat, i'll admit, but there are two functionalities that are more easily implemented with the OF.

1. i use mediamonkey to create playlists from my computer library. then i simply click 'send to sansa (external),' from inside mediamonkey, and the software automatically moves the playlist (in .pla format), and the corresponding files to the player, sorted into appropriate folders. in one click i get the same playlists on my desktop on my sansa, from the 'playlists' directory in the OF.

rockbox can only use .m3u playlists as i have discovered. so the only way to 'export & sync' my playlists is to use mediamonkey to export the playlists to .m3u, THEN change the file paths manually in the .m3u's, THEN move the files AND the playlists over to the player. not nearly as simple as one click with the OF.

is there any easier way?

2. the shuffle implementation. about half the time i listen by adding everything on the player to the playlist, then do shuffle all, repeat all, and cycle through everything. sometimes, i want to hear a specific song, so i go 'back to music list' and choose the song title, and click play now. in the OF, this is easy, because the playlist is kept alphabetized. but in rockbox, everything is...well, shuffled. the only workaround i can find is to go back to the database->artists->(all files)-> then find the specific file in this view, and select it to play now. rockbox will then rebuild the playlist, starting with the selected file. everything will be shuffled if the shuffle option is on.

is there an easier way?

it's a shame because i really want the gapless and increased battery from rockbox. but if it's a pain to do these two (simple) tasks, i will probably give it up.

thanks in advace.

I just got a Sansa Clip+ the other day (first Sansa player, although I've looked into them before) and have been playing around a bit. I rockboxed it last night (painless process after working out what to drag and drop where!) and am really pleased with the improvements to the overall SQ that it offers. Add to that the near tripling of the battery life (18 hours!) and I'm really impressed.

One problem I am having though is the dreaded 'pitch/slowdown' problem; I've no idea if its better on the clip+ than it was on the clip, but unfortunately I can still hear it, although it is certainly true that it is worse on some songs than on others. I can fix the problem using the pitch and speed settings for single songs , but I was wondering if anyone had found a way to do this for all songs in one go?

I'm really enjoying finding out what this little thing can do and a workaround for this would be great!

Not sure about (1) since i don't really use external playlists.
For (2), there is a "shuffle" option under playback settings. I believe this does not mess up the order of the playlist. Or you can use the search function to search for your song in the playlist. Hope that helps :)

ok thanks for your response. i've decided that since it's a dual-boot, i'll keep rockbox for now, when i want true gapless or when i need to stretch the batt. i can always go back and forth between OF for what i'm used to, and rockB when i need it.

I installed RB today, but the font was so damn small, I couldn't see it, lol. Giving away my age now...

I haven't bothered changing the font on mine, but considering all the other options rockbox lets you tweak, I'm confident that you can change font and text size somewhere in the settings menu.

I have a Clip v2, which has (or, rather, had) the "pitch bug". Specifically, the Clip v2 plays 19 cents (about a fifth of a semitone) flat on all files that are encoded at 44.1 kHz. This happens for all Clip v2 Sansa firmware versions earlier than the latest Sansa firmware, which is version 02.01.35. It also happens with Rockbox, including a recent version I installed two days ago.

So the latest version of the Sansa firmware for the Clip v2 and all versions of the Sansa firmware for the Clip+ correct the "pitch bug", but Rockbox for both the Clip v2 and evidently for the Clip+ has the "pitch bug", which makes it play noticeably flat/slow on all files encoded at 44.1 kHz.

A workaround is to transcode everything to 48 kHz. This makes it play pretty much in tune. But it's a pain and transcoding decreases SQ for lossy files.

It's a shame - I listen to my Sansa Clip a lot, and I'd love to be able to move to Rockbox, but the Rockbox folks apparently haven't figured out how to make it play in tune, so I'm stuck with the otherwise inferior Sansa firmware for now.

Thanks for that. To my ears, the Clip+ OF also had the pitch problem...I've come to the conclusion I've got super sensitive ears or something! I'm wondering, as Rockbox can correct the problem for single songs using the pitch adjustment, whether there might be a way to alter it for all songs on the player in one setting. Perhaps that's something for a future firmware upgrade.

Like you say, its a shame as I'm really enjoying the player now I've Rockboxed it. I am beginning to wonder if I am hearing things though as there seem to be so few people noting it as a problem.

Damn me and my ears :frowning2:

No - it's definitely there, or at least on the Clip v2. I use it to practice guitar, and with and in-tune guitar and a track I know is in-tune, if I try to play along using the pre-02.01.35 firmware or Rockbox, it's way out of tune. The Clip plays flat. But with the newest Sansa firmware, 02.01.35, it plays in-tune, and I can play along and it sounds fine. Happy happy. :)

There's some discussion of the issue on this page:

The latest post is from May 24, so they're evidently aware of the pitch problem and are working on it.

I can't believe they sold out already. I've been waiting for them to put up a good clip+ deal for a while now.

It's not that hard to believe. $25 for 4GB is a great deal. If I was looking for one of these I would have grabbed one without hesitation here.

The main reason I can't believe they sold out already is that I checked woot before I went to sleep around 2am and they were still selling that crappy HTPC. I wake up at 12pm to see that they finally switched the item of the day but were already sold out, just my luck. Anyway, hopefully another deal pops up after they fix this pitch problem.
