This occured to me when I was posting in another thread. I love the Sony 7506s, but can't listen to them. I think they're compact, sturdy, decent looking, have good isolation -- everything I'm looking for in a closed can. But the treble drives me nuts after a few minutes.

Any headphones that you think are outstanding apart from how they sound?

Eggos and PX200's.

Loved the look of the former (especially with the iPod) and the design of the latter (folding, case/cord wrap around). But like dating, looks and smarts only go so far.

Davie, I liked the way they looked and that they were lite as a feather. I didn't care for the sound.

W100's - one sexy phone but something is missing in the sonics. I'm not even sure what it is but I'll keep trying then with different amps until I find the right match.

The W100 really needs tubes to sound great, Wmcmanus. I tried them with my dad's EAR HP4 and it really opened up their sound. However, I realize that the HP4's price is prohibitive (or else I'd own one too), but the lower-priced Singlepower amps would probably work well with the W100.

Regarding cans that were nice in every way except their sound, I would nominate the V600. The Sony MDR-V600 actually looks decent and is fairly comfortable for short listening periods. It's also quite resilient and seems well-built. It's attractive, professional-looking appearance and solid construction is very deceptive, however. The casual music enthusiast would be fooled by its pro-looks and relatively-high price tag. As soon as one listens to them, the truth is discovered: echoic, incoherent sound with boomy bass that doesn't extend but masks the midrange; the treble fares no better with an obvious roll-off and shrill character. I don't know what Sony did to change the sound so much from the decent V6. Sadly, the V600 was my first "high-end" headphone, but HD-580 and SR-60 helped me find another path.
