Does Sansa Clip compare to Walkman in SQ?

Right now I am utterly pissed at Sony and their Sony"care". I payed an extra $40 for the extended plan and now the damn sony guys are charging me $100/hour for repairs on the plastic siding (first it was a little crack, and now it developed into the whole screen coming apart along with the volume and hold button).

Anyway, to get to my topic, I am now planning on purchasing a Sansa Clip Plus ($40 price is same as Sony's warranty itself). My question is, how is the sound quality in comparison. Does it have less/more clearer sound, bass, treble? Also, do I have to worry about any physical flaws? Thanks for your time.

I find the Clip+ with either Flac or 192 and up rips sounds excellent with the CK10s, not as great with other phones. It's not on the same level as the Sony X, but not all that far below it either. Nice thing is the expandability to 20GB in my case (4GB Clip+) and 16GB Card (another $40).

With the IEMs I have, Sonys fit my sonic preferences better. The Clip on the other hand, does a very good job, considering it's small price tag.

I don't find it as good as the sony players, purely speaking out of sound. However, they are very good on their own. Not to mention, they have a micro sdhc support, flac support, and somewhat does gapless.

What are some other portable MP3 players that are better than the Cowon (at around $200-$300)?

What if a user wanted to use Vinyl with a portable amplifier or something, is that possible? (I'm new to Vinyl so try not to laugh if what I said is ridiculous =]]])

Wow, I put this in the wrong post...but what I meant was Vinyl players to an amp and then to the headphones.

That's possible, but you you did post "What if a user wanted to use Vinyl with a portable amplifier or something, is that possible? (I'm new to Vinyl so try not to laugh if what I said is ridiculous =]]])" into a thread about "Does Sansa Clip compare to Walkman in SQ?"

My fuze which has almost the same sq as the clip can't compete s639. It might be because my fuze is a v2 and therefore cannot be rockboxed. Without rockbox, the eq is pretty much useless and inferior to the eq on s639. When eq is off, s639 is still better imo with better bass and soundstage. So, if you consider S or X series, they are superior to clip/fuze but E series don't have a chance.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I bought the blue 4gb Clip+ today. My impressions so far - it's lightweight/convenient to carry and SQ is not bad at all, just different. Compared to the Walkman though, I'm not really "feeling" my music (don't know what it is though....). One thing I don't like is the lack of customization for the EQ and enhancements which came with the walkman (clear stereo, digital sound enhancement, clear bass). Overall, I'm pleased for the low price.
Now, I've heard something called Rockbox for this. Does it enhance the sound at all?

For future consideration i bought the e-344 8gb sony walkman and i am extremely pleased with it!

I was in a similar predicament as yourself debating between the sansa fuze/clip and the sony. In the end the EQ difference brought me over to Sony. Although i have to admit if the current versions of the clip/fuze can be rockbox'ed id be tempted to switch over.

As for rockbox you can get more info here : Rockbox - Open Source Jukebox Firmware

And no you cannot rockbox your clip .. yet.

I don't really touch the eq much at all on my clip. I wanted to add though, the synergy with a set of triple.fi's is pretty amazing.
