Does the AKG K701/2 do anything better than HD800?

(read between the lines) I'm sure the HD800 is the pinnacle of Dynamic headphones as of 010..Yes, I'm being serious. But if you claim a headphone does anything better, watch out.. He becomes a ravaged beast waiting to not attack your arguments, but you..Subtle, he is not..

Subtle I most definitely am not. It's a play on words. I'm very far from subtle.

Honestly though, I don't see how you can interpret what I said to Acix as a personal attack? I'm sure, like any good artist, that he appreciates constructive criticism with regards to his work. How else does one grow without another providing their interpretation? I'm not alone in this either. I've had another head-fier send me a PM in the last thirty minutes since I made that post confirming exactly what I stated.

Have you taken the time to listen to his album?

Oh shoot. You give me far too much credit. Who is really going to take the impressions of an angry ravaged beast seriously anyhow?

Exactly why I mentioned it. It's as puzzling to me as it is to you. Listen to some of his tracks though and tell me you don't hear the same thing.

For a headphone most known for its immense soundstage, the K702 sure didn't do his tracks justice.

Yes I took a good amount of time listening to his album.

His tracks are, indeed tight and controlled (which are very unique in my music collection.) It is all about personal preference, I mean. For me they sound fine from most of my headphones.

He also uses studio monitors and stuffs other than his K702. I think what he hear is what he intends.

as of late i read a lot of threads but don't really comment

this sort of thing is one of the reasons why - seems to be over the line - hope the moderators are taking a look at this

back on topic - i'm actually really interested in the subject of the thread and would love to see other folks share their impressions where applicable

I do have both HD800 and K701, and I think I already made points, but say again.

I have headphones which cost much more, and ones get much better respects. But in the end, most of time I listen to HD800 and K701.

That's interesting.

I really liked the K701s, but sold them for $$$ for my beyer T1s. I really did miss them after I sold them (and thought seriously of picking up a set of K702s from B&H...only $259 new FWIW), but got the HD800s instead. I thought why not go for the better can.

I no longer miss the K701s. I am also on the record for saying that between the HD650/DT880/K701, I preferred the AKG offering the most. But with the HD800s (as I too find them with similar presentations), I find no reason to go back to the AKGs.

I have k702 and I took the ear pads off today and there is a white ring that goes around the driver. What is that for? Is it to give more bass or does air pass through it? It had me concerned because it looked like there is a crease in the middle of one of the sections.

I noticed that too only on my left phone though. The right phone's white ring seems to be perfectly closed with no crease. I'm not sure if this is the cause of some rattling I'm hearing. Either way I'm sending it back to AKG to be repaired.

Probably not the cause of the rattle. I haven't heard a rattle in this pair but I sent a pair to akg to be repaired for a rattle. I know the rattle was in the driver itself. It took a lot of volume and bass to hear the rattle.

You're right. Tight and controlled is my personal preference. It allows me to control and separate or glue the sound in multiple layers. About the bass, I'll try to explain few things, there are audiofile myths that dance music is made or monitored with bassy hps, but this is not quite true and actualy is the other way around and I'lll try to explain.

Let's take the Ultrasone Pro-900, for example. If I need to mix on the 900 I'll be a minimum of 10db over where I actually want to be, meaning that the coloration of the 900 will trick me by 10db. The second explanation of the same action is that I boost my bass by 5db, but on the 900 you'll hear my track boost by 15db. I hope this make sense. Now a 5db boost can be okay on most systems, but 15 or 20db can start to cause problems and sounds over bassy or distorted on some systems that are already colored or fully boosted.

I listen to my music on the 800s and it was really fun to hear subass notes under 30Hz. For example, Some Romance, track 3, maybe it sounds bass light on computer speakers or small speakers that can't get lower than 50hz (and on most small systems the bass stops between 150Hz to 80Hz). My main problem with the 800 was the bell shape/curve cut between 1.000Hz and 6.000Hz and this area is very important, and maybe the most important in the hearing and the musical spectrum. I encourage any 800 owner that has EQ in his possession to try to boost this area and bring it to 0 to 3db + and report his findings.

But again, this is only my conclusion, and it doesn't mean that the 800 are not fun hps.

I stumbled onto this thread while searching for a solution to the absolutely awful headband on the K702. I love the sound, but hate the scalp pressure. Anyway, I think it's worth pointing this out:

The Secret Cause of Flame Wars

The conclusion seems actually quite obvious, but I see people in online forums fail to consider the possibility all the time, myself included. So it's one thing to say that people should be nice because it's just better to be nice, and another to say that you should be nice because there's an extremely good chance that you misinterpreted the tone of a message as it's just text. If I ever get to demo some HD800's, I'll have something more on-topic to contribute.
