STAX SIGMAS COMPARED, LOW BIAS, SIGMA PRO AND SIGMA/404
Aug 5, 2010 at 9:29 AM Post #91 of 149
Dear forum members,

I've got a "new" Sigma Pro which was hardly used. There is a big difference when I compare it to my updated Sigma - which is now a Pro.
Are there any experiences on the forums who compare these two?
Is there a thread about the SRA14S which is one of my favourite amps. I'm looking for information about this amp. Especially about the cards (electrostatic cartridges). It's my favourite amp when using Sigma and listening to records.

Regards Georg

Doesn't surprise me since you may have different combinations of cables and drivers in the various Sigma Pros which were upgraded from low bias. In other words there are  a lot of ways to make a Sigma Pro, including a Sigma/404 upgrade.

Also if your "new" unit hasn't been used for a while it may need some warmup/breakin.

Can you be more specific about the sonic differences and what parts were put into your upgrade?

The upgraded Sigma has a Lambda Signature NOS driver and the newest cable that is used now. I think I'll hang them on for some days and try to figure out how to describe the differences in English :))

Georg, while you're at it, how about having a go at describing the differences between the Stax Monitor equalised Lambda and the non-equalised Sigma Pro?

Dear John,
I'm constantly thinking about hor to do the comparison. I think I a pink noise / white noise CD ti burn in the headphones at the same time for at least 15 hours for two oe three days and the I use one or two well known CDs to make it simple for other people to understan what I want to say.
Horowitz, Moscow Concert seems to be a good choice for piano playing
Osca Peterson, We get requests for bar jazz
http://www.pfleid.de/klassik_e.html download free classical music: Cello-concerto

Any suggestions

Georg,
maybe try some stuff that every card carrying music lover should have in their collection?
"Kind Of Blue" - the 1997 remaster? Lots of people have that and can lock into what you are hearing.
The Beatles remasters?
Jacques Loussier Trio "Play Bach" Volumes I and II on Decca? Lots of nicely recorded acoustic instruments (piano, drums and bass).

Kind of Blue is a very good idea! I think every music lover needs this CD/LP!
They headphones are gettin in shape. I'm off for one week and then I start writing...

I love Jacques Loussier. Another excellent recording is Trompetissimo with Maurice Andre giving a Jazz flavor to Bach's music, similar to Loussier. One of my favorites. And the Sigma makes the music shine.

Dear list members,

I lived for a while with my Sigma Pro (with SRM1MKIIPP)and had it directly connected to A Quattro II with a Stax PCOCC cable. So a reals Stax system. I wanted to describe differences between the Sigma and the lambda connected to the SRM Monitor. The problem is that I like both systems and they provide totally different ways into music.

The Lambda tells me/ shows me everything that is on the CD. I like that approach very much. Every little detail is there ....

The Sigma provides me with music. Not necessarily the truth like the Lambda. But it is something that is really close to it plus "something extra" / "something special"

Tha Lambda is a mastering tool!

The Sigma is enjoying music.

I can't explain better than that.

Georg has nailed the Sigma sound rather well. The bottom end really has a nice heft to it that the Lambda doesn't, the midrange sounds absolutely superb and quite real (piano and vocals especially) and there is absolutely no sting to any sibilants. The volume setting is interesting - it does sound better at the correct volume and this is quite obvious when you dial it up - it just sounds right. Just because you can, try your Sigma Pro with the equalizer on.

I have a pair of normal bias sigmas and the mids are absolutely beautiful. I love the soundstaging. My only problem is bass. Well, there isn't. They have a little punch but absolutely no extension. I don't think this is normal, but one thing I've noticed is that the previous owner replaced the mineral wool. I assume he replaced it with mineral wool but now I'm not so sure. Does the mineral wool affect the bass performance. If so, is there anywhere I can get some to replace it or an alternative that would be just as good? At first I thought it could be an amping issue since I was previously using a T1S, but I now have an srd7 with a 100 watt amp. I have a lot more drive but still zero bass. I do love everything else about the sound though.
