for those who didn't get it - you have to hear at least 2 of the above 'phones with classical music

after you vote, please tell us why did you prefer your choice over the other 'phones you heard!
especially if it's upgraded HD600 over stock

i can see that we're getting votes for HD600 + upgrade cable. tell us which cable, smart asses!

DT880 - never heard
HD600 - owned for more than two years
HD600 w/ Equinox cable - owned for about a month
K1000 - auditioned for about 5-10 minutes
CD3000 currently own and have owned for almost 10 months

Having said this, I voted for the CD3K. The highs are more extended and better than the 600s and the mids are much better IME and IMHO. Classical tends to be more complex music that requires a larger soundstage and better imaging than the HD600 can provide. It gets congested when compared to the CD3K.

I wish I could help out with the K1K, but my experience with them is so limited that it would be stupid to say anything other than their extremely open design makes a very quiet environment a necessity. In my case the fan on my laptop is so loud that I wish that I had some closed cans that isolated better.

very true. the sony's have lots of spacey dark air in there. it feels like it enables details to be seen in great resolution in a huge place. the frontal depth in the sony's is the best i've heard - sounds can build up a firm wall very far from you, that's amazing!!! ... the HD600 just can't compete.. IMHO.. nor the DT880, in that regard.

and what's "IME" ?

Adam,

This is very interesting. I'm interested in the results as I would like to purchase a set of headphones for listening to classical music.

Thanks for doing this.

I also forgot to mention that if you read through my review where I did an A/B comparison of the HD600 w/ a Cardas cable against the Sony CD3000 using both the Sugden HeadMaster and RKV I still much preferred the Sonys. The highs didn't sound as good, the soundstage was much more congested, and the sax sounded artificial. You can find the review buried several months back in the headphone section.

JohnFerrier,
welcome to the boards. always remember that there are "useless voters" that vote with no true experience of testing and comparing, there ain't enough people participating in the poll, and almost %100 of the voters haven't heard all of the phones above, including me (though i'll get there if i stick in here too long..)

AdamZuf (shalom chaver, ani gam israeli),
It is too difficult to select 1 headphone for all of my classical music, as each performs better in certain situations (W2002 in chamber and strings, HP-2 for baroque and horns, Omega II for intricate pieces and woodwinds and ER-4S for nearly everything – the ER-4S simply lack a visceral bass, which I sometimes need). Overall the HD600 w/Cardas are my favorite, as they simply sound great with all classical music. While all the headphones I mentioned excel in this genre, the HD600 (especially with the Cardas) are the most engaging and rewarding.

I have heard and owned all of those phones, only my HD600 was with Cardas.
Used a few amps, Fisher 400, MPX3, ZOTL, nOrh SE9,...etc
And I listen to a lot of classical music.
IMO, K1000 is the best. And the HD600/Cardas at second. CD3000 third.
Enjoy.

NeilPeart, shalom! good to see other israelies in here..but too bad your not in israel for us to meet!
it's a good point what you got there. would be nice if other voters will comment if they tend to listen to a specific classical genre.

MoLtoSoLo,
how low do you think the K 1000 can go?
