I am also getting UM's own quad IEM (2 woofers, 1 mid and a tweeter with 3-way crossover) that's supposed to be released this month. I was planning to get those in solid colored shells because the artwork I have in mind just looks better over a solid color.

After seeing those pics above of gotthing's awesome looking remold, I have decided to do things differently. I've seen the inside of a TF10 and without an extra driver, it's really not that fun to look at, so I'm getting it in the solid shells with artwork instead. The UMs, on the the otherhand... I just can't put them in a solid colored shell now. So, they'll be in translucent blue with no logo, so I can see all the internal goodness.

Of course I'll give my impressions, but I have to warn you, I am a self-proclaimed "poser audiophile" and not nearly as seasoned as a lot fo you here, so my review should be taken with a grain of salt.

It's looking like I wont have my customs till mid October, FYI.

After seeing the pics, i was going to change to plain clear. Since....they look that amazing. But after thinking about it, i shouldn't bother Sam THAAAAAAAAAT much. So i'm sticking with light Smoke (Transparent Grey) and changed my White artwork to silver instead.

My Quads should be hear next week.

Just received my remolded E500's today. They were shipped on September 11, so great quick shipping with FedEx. Since I am still at work, I have not been able to give them a good listen, but the first impressions are great. They fit perfect and sound very good, even from my iPhone. I can't really recall the sound of the E500's prior to the remold, I have been listening to UM3X since the cable of the Shure's broke.

When I get home I will give them a proper listen, and I will make some pics. I will try to compare them with my UM3X/UM56 combo (which is really amazing) and a RSA Tomahawk headphone amp.

Does anyone know how backed up Sam is right now, and how long the whole process should take?

Also, does Sam have an AIM or some sort of messenger?

Please refer to page one for contact details. Process should take 2-3 weeks after arriving before they ship out, as there are many domestic orders Unique Melody are handling at the moment.

They have about 12 engineers in their lab that do remold and making of the monitors.

I know about his regular email address, but I know of some people who contact him through some messenger I think (MSN)? I need something urgent to be cleared up, so it would be nice to know instead of waiting for a week for his response.

It clearly states on the first page that that is his messenger.

I have put the large images in a zipfile, here is a download link. I have a nice DSLR camera, so good quality pics (unfortunately not yet any skills to use it properly

My impressions:

Sound: I have the feeling that the drivers kind of "need to get used" to their new surroundings. The sound seems to be a bit damped, but I had them hooked up to an iPod playing at high volume all night. They are sounding better today, but not yet sounding as clear as my UM3X. Anyone who has experience with this (customs needing some burn-in time)? Probably the different sound from the E500 compared to the UM3X is also affecting my judgment.

It is hard to remember how my original E500's sounded before the remold, I have been listening with the UM3X ever since the cable cracked.

Comfort: the fit is great. I had a feeling that this would be the case, since the guy that made the UM56 impressions also made the impressions I sent to UM.

Satisfied?: YES. Even though I am not yet convinced by the sound, I have the feeling that it will improve. Right now, there are exactly what I want them to be, a nice backup to the UM3X/UM56 combo. The overall experience with Sam has been good. Okay, he sometimes took a little long to respond to emails, but the replies were always friendly and answered all of my queries I.

I will post an update in a couple of days, and I will have them burn-in the next days to see if that changes the sound. If anyone has any advice on this, please let me know

I have to personally thank you for posting these pics. One of the pairs of customs I'm getting from UM will have a solid black shell. I have been struggling with the decision of a matte vs glossy finish but I wasn't sure just how UM's solid color shells looked (I'm guessing they simply don't polish/buff the shell when they're done constructing it, but Sam didn't explain. He only told me they could do a "matte" finish). Your black IEMs have won me over and make the decision a no brainer. Glossy, FTW!

EDIT: I can't believe JH isn't capable of solid colored shells...
... and I came to the realization, I don't recall ANYONE complaining about their UM's fit. I don't think anyone has needed a refit yet! Dammit, I just wish they would get my impressions already.
