Owl City - sounds alot like the postal service

I never heard about owl city until fireflies.  I heard it in the radio a few times (i almost never listen to radio intentionally) and at first i though it was oasis
bigsmile_face.gif
because his voice reminds me a little of liam gallagher's voice, and also the melody suits well with oasis "new" catchy style.
well..anyway,i can say with open mouth that i HATE everything that's mainstream these days (from the year 2000 to be more correct) but i really like this song.  its got a nice melody and also nice production..not something bombastic, but suit's this style of music nicely.

I don't know any other songs from that album.so i guess i will give it a listen.  hope this is not a "one hit" album.

I think if you like fireflies, you'll probably like the rest of the album :)

that's nice to hear.  lately i am looking for some mainstream rock music,I got a little tired of metal and would like to listen to other stuff as well.

name me a couple of things you listen to, a lot of the stuff I listen to is mainstream so if I know the rough lines of what you like, I might be able to help you out. no guarantees though cos' I've drifted from rock a fair bit.

I really like avril lavigne..and i am just listening to owl city "ocean eyes" and you were right..it is sounds very nice to me.  I guess the whole album is "fireflies" style heh..?  I really like the melodies, i wish it would has some more electric guitar action to it..a bit havier,"rockier".
if there is such a thing than this would be good for me.  I also like placebo.

after listening to the whole album,i say it is definitely worth getting,it is also good sounding...imo ofcourse. what i don't like is that the melodies are kind of repeating themselves a little, but i really like those happy melodies!

can you guys recommend me other artists that make the same music only with more guitar action?

i can't help on the avril lavigne front, but if you like placebo, listen to muse. alternative rock, go for lifehouse perhaps, but if you like electric guitars, hmm...

well, you can sample creed, the killers, hoobastank, nickelback, shinedown and 30 seconds to mars. i'm just running stuff off that i see and off the top of my head, you may not necessarily like them of course. lol

Well I haven't heard the album but I've heard a lot of airtime of that Fireflies song. It really annoys me, tries so hard to sound like Ben Gibbard it's unbelievable. I think Owlcity (whoever he is) replied in respect of the accusations of sounding like The Postal Service and he said something like "I'm just taking it further, to the next level".. how arrogant is that? like he's better than his influences... that doesn't sit right with me. Plus, the song is nothing new and sways too much toward pop for my liking.

As someone said, very forgettable music.

there are a lot of bands/artists that sound very similar to others and have very strong influences from others.  as long as he didn't steel the songs i think that is legitimate.
common..give the guy some slack...it is not easy to write music and perform.

Yeah, most 'mainstream' pop/rock/etc does all sounds very similar for that specific time but this one takes the biscuit a little bit. It's just the fact that he admits to having The Postal Service as an influence (not a bad thing) but thinks he can come out of the blue and take it a step further sounds a bit arrogant and I don't like that.

Owlies Quote - “They (The Postal  Service)released a record in 2003, and that was it,” he said. “There was really nothing to compare it to until some one else came along and wrote the next chapter. Maybe that’s this record. Maybe that’s this band.”

What, is he writing songs to sound like other bands to make a comparison? Doesn't sound like the best way to make music if you ask me.

Owlcity, the next chapter. ha.

you guys realise that everyone has different tastes in music right? I think what matters is that there are people who enjoy it and if they do, why do we condemn their tastes for it? I'm sure some of you have listened to some music that people have dissed about and then kept quiet about it after.

Sure, everyone has different tastes. I've got plenty of guilty pleasure, none that I wouldn't admit to listening to though. People are just stating their opinions, I don't see any personal condemnation.

Owlcity, the next chapter. ha.

The thing I don't understand is how anyone can put Owl City in the same league as Postal Service. It's even more laughable he thinks his music could be the next chapter as if he's improving on what came before. The fact he doesn't know of another album (of which there are plenty) to compare against Give Up since it's release shows how little he knows about the genre.

Ack I dunno, maybe I picked him up wrong or it was a poorly worded comment but I rarely get into new bands unless I like the personalities behind them... sometimes that can stand in the way of enjoying good music (think some, not all, Oasis).

I just replied in here as I thought it was funny as I had the same thought when I first heard the song. Anyway whether he's got enough ink to write the next chapter or not we'll see, these things sort themself out.

Nah, I know what you meant. Just reading back what I had said it sounded a little harsh... thought I'd give him a little slack.
