To you lucky people that went to the Get-Togethers... (and anyone else who happens to have heard both

) <-- actually maybe this should be the title?

Braver,

Could you describe sweeter?

more present, and smooth. sparkling without being bright. the 580 is a bit dull in comparison. you know when you hear it

like when a guitar solo kicks in, with sweet HD600 treble you get the shivers, like "oooooohhhh, aaaaaaahhhh", HD580 treble is more like "hmkay".

the 600 different rather than better tho, but I'd prefer the 600

if robbing banks didn't get you jailed most of the time, I'd be all over em and buy me a good setup and a 600 with the loot

I have both pairs tricked out with Clou cables, and both are excellent. I'd say the HD580 has about 90% the performance of HD600. For the extra money the HD600 is slightly more open/detailed, capable of extracting fine details better. The HD580 is very slightly warmer sounding, but both models would be on the warm side of nuetral.

The HD600 has full wire mesh cover which allow more openness vs HD5800 molded plastic grill, plus the HD600 has closer matched
drivers again allowing slightly more open/detailed sound. They are close but to me HD600 is superior, worth the extra green IMO.

Dark Angel pretty much says what I was going to say. There is a difference, but the 580 get you 80-90% of the 600. I was acctually just thinking that a better upgrade than 580 -> 600 might be to just get the Clous for the 580?

Yeah, I was wondering that myself...

Hmm, okay, that's a difference I suppose

:undecided: (hmm these r3mix forum smilies look too dark and glum on a white background)

But they do sound quite similar, don't they? I think if I want to get another pair of phones after 580 it would be something different. The Beyer DT931, for example. It's frequency response is almost flat as a ruler from 20Hz to 2000Hz!

****, and thus doth upgrade-itis set in even before my HD580s hath arrived

hahahah, the 580s are fun cans. honestly, you aren't missing anything with them. Improvements on the 580s are pretty small in terms of airyness/soundstage/details... other phones do have a different sonic character, but I won't comment on that 'cause I haven't found my "perfect" phones yet.

Yup, I'm really getting ahead of myself here, I haven't even heard the HD580's yet

you could listen to the 580's with the backs of the earcups taken off, and that would be even more open than a metal grill.

Hey people. Since I have recently made a journey to finding the right combo for my ears I can honestly say that the best thing to do is to analyze very carefully what it is you really want for audio reproduction.

Me personally I like many types of music and the HD600's are well suited to many types of music so they were a good choice. I wanted to hear things as if I was there, I wanted to hear every detail on the recording because that for me would be the closest thing that the recording could offer to reality. But at the same time i wanted it to be MUSICAL, I didnt want to be blasted with digital harshness...

Sometimes the combo is so revealing that recordings you once thought sounded good enough to listen to now sound very crappy and hurt your ears. COmbined with the Melos the level of sonic resolution is so high that on some cd's I can actually hear that the sounds I am hearing are not music but compressed digital noises recorded onto different tracks and pressed onto a cd. Do you really want this? The thing is, with well recorded cd's, particularly cd's that undergo the smallest amount of studio time, the sound is so real and stunning you will be breathless. You will also see that you cannot EQ your system to get a hi-fi sound.

For me the only way to get sound that satisfied my need to BE with music was to get very good headphones, and a very, very good amp. Having these two things will show you how close to real the sound can be... And once you have these things you will see that you can hear strait into your cheap ass cd player, and you can practically hear the bits getting lost inside it. SO you come to realize that the most important thing really is the SOURCE. And that without a good source all your other efforts are only to show you how much your current cheap ass SOURCE is leaving behind...

So its a circle of sorts, you will not trully appreciate the headphones or any other part of your system until they are all at equal levels. So buying the HD580/600's isnt really a question IMO. The question is what will you do once you have them???

Good job ai0tron. I'm convinced that I should keep my HD580's for life, even I'm planning to get the AKG K1000.
