I'm thinking of buying the Sony MDR ZX700 headphones.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/-/dp/B004P150LY

Problem is they don't seem to be on sale anywhere else in the UK (Sony still have them on pre order and have them for about £110).

Do you think I should just go for them from the above link, or do they risk being fakes? Another thing, I've never heard of 'British Bargains', has anyone on here?

Finally, the ZX500s are £38 on Amazon from the same seller; are the 700s worth the extra money, as well as the same questions above?

Thanks in advance...

I got mine recently on AMAZON UK and they came no problem and sound great - only thing that they never came with was an extension cable or jack adaptor, but looking at the box it seems they may be US version - not sure how this fares for warranty, but so far no problems......

cheers,

I have the Japan version ZX700. 1.8 meter extension but no jack adapter. Mostly ipod/portable, mini system, and PC pictures on the packaging. Only stuff with 3.5mm connectors, lol.

@JamesB123. In my research I came to the conclusion that they used the same driver from the $99 Marqii(or Piiq Premium now) for the ZX500. Not the same enclosure and pads etc. but the reviews can be a decent guide to the quality level. The Marqii reviews helped me decide/assess that the ZX700 would be worth the try.

Of course price and SQ are lower on the ZX500 but they are different. Circum-aural vs. Supra-aural and the ZX500 are actually portable phones. Smaller and lighter so they have 40mm drivers instead of 50mm drivers. 70ohms though vs. the ZX700 24ohms may be a factor as far as dynamics coming from players having weaker outputs.

Hi Joker;

Did you try any Superlux? 662, 662B, 662F, 668 or any?
Some bros here compare this USD50 can to Denon D1100 and superlux win in many areas.

I am moving up from AKG518, before thinking about M750, d510, d1100 and now Superlux.

I bought eterna (2 nos, 1 as gift to other) by your advice. 1st time buying gear without listening, but super happy about that.
So i really want to hear your comment about the Superlux.

Thanks

Only the 668B. It really isn't the right upgrade if you like the Eterna and K518. The D1100, MS400, M-Audio Q40, should all be more up your alley.

Cheers for this. I would have replied quicker but I didn't get the subscription emails.

Just ordered the last pair through Bargains 2000 (fulfilled by Amazon) so I hope to get them Friday.

I'm not technically minded when it comes to headphones, so some of that went over my head. :D

Thanks anyway though; I decided to get the ZX700 in the end.

THe 595 definitely doesn't fit the portability requirements of this thread. As for the others, the HD428 will have to do for now as that's the only one I have.

Hi Joker - just wondered what your opinion was on the Marshall Major?

How do they compare to others in the same price category - CAL!/Sony MDR V6/Sennheiser HD 205?

I've never heard them so I have no opinion. I think there was a post a while back from someone who bought a cheaper headphone with the same housings and thought the build quality was good. That's the extent of the reading I've done on the Major...

Hey Joker I read through someof the ehadphone reviews. Great job! Now I'm trying to decide on a pair of portable headphones.
The contestants and the prices I would get them for:

Sennheiser HD25-1 Adidas Edition - $160
Phiaton MS400 - $160
AIAIAI TMA-1 - $200
Denon D1100 - $200

Now both sound quality AND looks are important to me. I know looks are subjective, so here my ranking:

1. MS400
2. HD25-1
3. D1100
4. TMA-1

Importance of featurs:

Looks = Sound Quality > Comfort = Isolation > Price

Now how would you rank them SQ wise? I saw in your reviews that the HD25-1 got a higher average score than the MS400...
I mainly listen to Hiphop, House, some Triphop and some Rock (Limp Bizkit / Linkin Park / Incubus). Which one of the four headphones would you recommend for the genres I listen to?

Well, I did also score them on all of your other criteria, not just average score. Looks like the MS400 and HD25 are in a dead heat until you get to SQ and isolation - the HD25 just cannot be beat in passive noise blocking and sounds pretty darn good. Of course personal preferences could swing it either way but I don't think the MS400 has the clarity or detail levels of the HD25. In case you missed it there's a table that sums everything up at the bottom of post #2 in this thread.
