Thanks guys, you rock.
Aside from being more portable, more isolating, and much better-built, the M-80 is also a little tighter and smoother than the CAL!. Not a huge sound quality difference but I'd much rather have the M-80 for portable use and the CAL! for use at home.
Well the HD25 sit on the ears and clamp quite tightly. Some people might prefer this, but most will find that uncomfortable after a while. Far better isolation and portability than the COP though.
The COP aren't really bad per se, but I've heard better in the price range. I have a pair at the moment in fact, though I intend to transplant some Fostex T50rp drivers into them
You could take your M50's to almost any Radio Shack and compare them directly with the M-80 using your own player, figure out whether they're the kind of sound you're looking for...
If nothing else it gives you a good baseline. I think they're a fantastic value given that the street value is hovering close to $150, very happy with mine as portables, they even get some use around the house.
Hi Joker. Thanks a lot for your diligence in reviewing the phones. After going through most of the pages I still can’t decide: have some Denon ahd2000. They’re great! But suited for in-house use only, really. What very portable cans to get that have a similar level SQ? If necessary I can use a Meier Corda Move to amp them, although I noticed that with the denons the SQ is actually better straight out of rockboxed iPod! Noise isolation is not that important but SQ yes. I listen to any kind of music and actually prefer clarity, soundstage and separation over bass punch…..Many people seem to favor the V-Moda 80: is there a less expensive alternative? Thanks again!
Thanks for your reply!!
Yeah, they seem to be praised quite often...only I was looking for some smaller/more compact/portable cans.
Possibly something I can "fold flat" around my neck when walking around and not listening to......
Do I have to give up on SQ in this case?
Thanks again,
Huck
IMO the M-80 are actually more comfortable when worn around the neck than many headphones that do fold flat... The cups are very small and narrow (that whole stretched hexagon shape), pictures are deceptive. Circumaural cups that fold flat tend to end up choking you or gracing your chin, unless the headband's very large and then they're not so portable (unless they're collapsible).
My M-80's cups end up sort of parallel to my neck without barely touching it (the lower tips is the only part that does). I'm 5'10" but I'm skinny and don't have a big/fat neck, YMMV.
I think they struck a perfect balance in that regard tho, although I guess the on ear fit isn't for everyone either. If anything I wish they were collapsible (for portability/packing) rather than flat folding (which wouldn't reduce the space they take up in a bag much)... They're pretty portable as is but the larger M-100 end up in a smaller (tho wider) package when collapsed.
Any portable headphone that comes close to the UM Miracle?
