Recently I was browsing through the customer reviews of The Guess Who albums on amazon.com.

Here are some fragments (about Burton Cummings' voice):

What a voice .... I'm now 40 and I have to hear a voice that compares to Burton Cummings. ....
His voice gives me goosebumps. ...

Cummings' voice is incredible ... it sends chills everytime I listen to him ...

He is truly the best in the business ...Fantastic voice ...

I've always liked Burton Cummings' vocals.
He knows how to use dynamics and has a good range.

Burton Cummings was (and still is) one of the greatest voices in rock.

Robert Plant was once asked
"If he could sing like anybody else, who wuould it be?"
The legendary voice of led Zeppelin replied, "Burton Cummings".
Mighty high praise indeed.[/size]

He was one hell of a singer, delivering some of the greatest vocals ....

"lead singer with one hell of a voice"

Robert Plant rightly calls Burton Cummings the best singer in rock.
(Where/when did Robert Plant say it?)

***********************************************

Yeah, listening to Burton Cummings' "American woman", "These Eyes",
"Share the Land", "Albert Flasher", etc. is an incedible experience!

Burton Cummings was a fantastic singer!

Was he better than Robert Plant?
We consider only their vocals and vocal abilities.
This is not about how good they were as frontmen, composers, lyricists, etc.
This is not about their physical appearance, showmnaship, etc.

Are we just talking purely from a vocal perspective or from a 'lead' perspective and songwriting perspective as well? If we are talking about the whole role of 'lead singer', there is no better model than Robert Plant.

Forget about them as lyricis, composers, frontmen, showmen, etc

Only their vocals and vocal abilities.

I think that Burton Cumming is better than Robert Plant.

I've always thought Burton Cummings had one of the best voices ever in rock.

And, to answer the question, I agree his singing talent is better than Plant's.

Well put. Amazing voice, which is the only thing that made their music notable. He just got mixed up with the wrong crowd, musically speaking. Imagine him in Zep? It would have been interesting to hear him sing Stairway to Heaven. Ehh, but things are/were the way they are/were for a reason. This takes nothing away from Plant, however; as others have said, he had the whole package, not just a great voice.

2 different singers ... different styles / sounds ... both bands can be said to be blatantly commercial but The Guess Who especially so ... (and Canadian NOT British ) .

Plant was one of those singers who were very gifted but were more concern about how high he can sing in falsetto than how good he was singing... I don't think there's a lack of vocalists who were better than him.
