Edit: placing edit here due to lack of clarity in title.

I know the Fiio pairs well with the ER4P. My question is if it also pairs well/has enough power for the ER4S too. I ask this because 1) the ER4S has a much lower impedence, 2) it's preferred since rated as having better accuracy and also I found them for about $25 less than the ER4P on one website.

Hello,

I've been perusing this forum for awhile now, but this is my first time posting. I have a Cowon S9 that I want to get a good pair of iems to complete my setup. I like getting a neutral response, and so I've decided to go with the Etymotic er4. I also need my setup to be portable, so unless there's a similarly small and relatively inexpensive amp, I'm getting the Fiio e5. My question is this: can the fiio drive the er4s or should i go with the er4p? I know there's the cable adapter, but i'm already streching my budget as it is, so a $50 converter cable just won't work for me.

Thanks in advance

x2 - Only got my E5 yesterday & haven't used it with my ER-4, but I reckon it should be fine. Plenty of power in the little thing. The bass boost may come in handy too...

original post was perhaps unclear. making an edit. My question is whether it would be sufficient for the ER4S or if I need to go with the ER4P as seems to be the pairing I see most on the forum.

ER4S + E5 works fine for me.

If you plan on using an amp most of the time, go ahead and get the ER-4S. The ER-4S has tons of upside depending on source and for sure amps. Some amps have great synergy with the ER-4S that will bring out the best in them. I have not heard the E5 so I have no idea if it is one that will do the ER-4S justice. Even if it doesn't, when the budget allows you can always upgrade to a better amp down the line, that is of course if the ER-4S is actually your cup of tea. It seems people love the treble extension, clarity, and detail of the ER-4S and they get amps with may have a bass boost to give the phone some more balance to help get the best of both worlds. Good luck.
