MF V-DAC v. Benchmark DAC-1

Hi oldson

I have a question regarding the Mascot PSU you use with your V-DAC. I also have a V-DAC and I posted on the "Musical Fidelity V-DAC owners?" thread a few days ago, but had no replies:

http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f7/mus...1/index45.html

I bought a Maplin PSU but it exhibits a high frequency buzz over my speakers, apart from that I think it sounds a bit better than the stock PSU. I would like to eliminate the buzz, I believe it is because the Maplin PSU is a switched mode PSU. Is the Mascot PSU switched mode or linear? In the specification it is described as linear, but I am sceptical. Would I here buzzing with this PSU on my setup?

Why are you considering selling your V-DAC, are you not happy with it? Or just want to try something new?

Thanks!

I owned the Musiland MD10 and gave the VDAC a try- I liked it better as it wasn't as bright or as harsh as the MD10 (don't know why, my ears told me). I was looking for something much higher end in my estimation and thought the Audio-gd Ref-1 might be that as it offers so much more in the way of hardware over the VDAC (it has to account for something, right?). The Ref-1 is much better and more refined than the VDAC (across the board) for sure but it's not mind-blowing like so many describe their upgrades. That said, I don't think I could ever sell the Ref-1 as I am completely spoiled with the quality of sound and going backwards is not an option for me.
My point is- the VDAC is a great value and would satisfy most sane listeners (not most of us I'm guessing).

could this be because it upscales everything? or were you using usb on the v-dac too?

I don't know if this may help but I just did an A/B comparison to the V-Dac to the Bel Canto DAC 2 and I thought the Bel Canto had slightly better bass and resonance. The V DAC is still a good pick though and recommended if you want a slightly smoother sound from CD playback.
