Currently listening the MS1000 sans distancer.. They sound remarkably similar to the YUIN OK2 I used to own, a couple hours ago before I realize that my girlfriend might have lost them in the mall. Was going to send the MS1 back to Grado for the repair, thus the distancerless MS1000.

My grief cycle begins..

I didn't mind the sound of the ms1000's without the distacers (I.e. ms1's with grado jumbos.) but GREATLY prefer with. Oh yeah, and felt is a must for me.

Not the most ideal proband, as Grados have a built-in 10khz peak anyway. You'd propably end up in team treble when you mod it.

It happened almost right after the conversion, to be honest, I haven't heard 100% of what the MS-1000 is fully capable of.

But I was still blown away by half assing it.

Grattle can be cured by cleaning the driver. Most of the times it is a hair that is vibrating and causing the grattling. Guess you already tried that, sorry for your loss.

I am working on getting an MS1000 right now. I contacted RDS via PM yesterday about acquiring some distancers, but have yet to receive a reply. I think the next cheapest source would probably be somewhere around an extra $25 for the distancers. I hope they are a big improvement over my PK1. I had the D2000, and those certainly had more resolution over the PK1. I doubt the MS1 will be as good in this category, but the D2000 had bloated bass and some recessed mids. If the MS1000 will have strong mids, tight bass, large soundstage, and atleast the detail of my PK1 - I will be quite content. The MS1000 sounds like it will be a really enjoyable listen, especially considering my lowly sourced setup.

Is it worthwhile to do this same mod on an MS-2(i)? I've got a friend who's thinking of selling his old knocked-around pair for a steal and I'm tempted to try my luck with it. One other thing: Is there any relatively inexpensive source for "salad bowl" Grado pads, or are am I stuck paying $60 or so on them? I take it that one needs to fashion the distancers themselves now that proper Liberators are hard to come by.

The mod isn't to be recommended for the MS2 IMO (sssssh-boooom). If you want to build something that is at least comparable out of a MS2, organize yourself a set of HD414 pads and glue AKG K270 velours pads onto them. No distancers, no jumbos.

Hmmm... I wonder why that is? I'm sure the "phenomenon" that occurs when MS-1's are modded has been discussed at some point, but I wonder why they are unique in this case. I guess there's no success making "SR-1000's" either. Maybe I'll go track down an old MS-1 to fiddle with. Where can I get/have made those distancers, again?

The MS1 (and the MS Pro) are unique because they sound very neutral and balanced compared to MS2 and the Grado crowd. Thus different results when "1000ing".

As you are from Canada, the best source for distancers is our buddy RDS.

Thanks for the scoop, Nickchen. I'll look into it! Funny, while the MS-2(i) isn't neutral like the MS-1(i) or its oldest brother, when compared to the SR325i(s), all I could dig up was that the MS-2i was waaaaay less coloured--very close to neutral for a Grado, anyway. Respectively speaking, I now understand...
