I just purchased an OPA Sun V2 from audio gd. Shipping was quick, unit sounded great throughout the burning in period. I noticed last night, about fifty hours in, that the left channel had a huge amount of distortion. This increased over the course of an hour and I decided to let the unit burn in over night. This morning I have no sound at all coming from that channel. What happened? Is there anything I should do or should I just ask audio gd to take it back in exchange for another one? Thanks for the advice,

Put your orig OPAs back in to make sure everything works. If so, contact Kingwa for a replacement.

make sure sun has very good contact with socket. Ive had similiar problems and usually related to connection.

Are you using the headphone amp in the Zero? After checking it's seated well, check the solder joints on the wires, check that the DAC section doesn't output a distorted signal (try plugging it into another amp or hi-fi system).

Good point, those pins on the OPA are not anything like the DIP8 legs on the ICs.

I should add, I used to get channel distortion with the Moon in the Zero, but the HDAM itself was fine, it was something to do with the Zero itself. I never figured out why it happened, but it only occurred when I used 3 HDAMs in it.

I have tried all of your suggestions. I replaced the opa with the burr brown adapter and got perfect sound through both channels so I know that it is the Sun unit. I put the sun in place and jiggled it around a bit without any success. The zero was already connected to my hi fi system instead of just headphones so thats how the channel drop out was originally found. Is there any way to test if its the zero instead of the HDAM? I mean the zero works fine with the burr brown adapter opa, but Currawong mentioned something regarding a problem with the zero itself. Thanks again,

You cannot say there is a problem with the Zero when you place an aftermarket part in it which was never tested by the manufacturer of the DAC. If the DAC works well with its original parts, then the aftermarket device is incompatible with your DAC, end of story. It's up to Audio-gd if they accept returning the Sun v2 for the reason of incompatibility. This is also even more probable that the HDAM is defective, so it's up to you and Kingwa that you receive another one or money back.

Well which one would you suggest, taking into account that the HDAM might just be incompatible? If i order another the same problem might occur and I would be back at square one. Is it possible that moon or earth would have any different compatability issues and I should switch it for one of those instead??

They aren't incompatible. A great many people are running Zeros with HDAMs in them with no issues. The main thing is, you want to do your best to find the source of the problem before sending stuff back, otherwise, you'll just end up frustrated. I'd contact Kingwa at Audio-gd and see what he says.

The other thing you could do is plug the HDAM in place of one of the opamps in the headamp section. If you get distortion on one channel, then you know the HDAM is faulty.

Hi,
I thought it was determined there was a Power supply issue trying to run 3 HDAMs?

Ok I tried the HDAM in the left section of the heaphone amp in the zero. I just got fizzing from the section on my headphones and the red light behind the HDAM on the headphone amp section flashed along with the green lights in the HDAM. The flashed from the two closest to the two farthest in pairs and the red light would flash as each pair lit up. On the headphones it sounded like a car's turn signal. So I guess this means the HDAM is the problem??

Actually, I used to run Earthx1 and Sunx2 when I had the zero... might not have been optimal, but it worked.
