Why not just give it a try on your own?
Just take 30 seconds or so to download and install...

Naive Software

much prefer the sound without it on, a personal preference i know...

Has any one installed the crossfeed plugin for foobar2000? Does it acually make a difference or does it just de-grade the sound quality?

Degraded the sound quality and as far as I know your output will not be bit-perfect when using any of the plug-ins.

It won't be bit-perfect anymore. Absolutely right. I am using crossfeed pretty much 24/7 though. Crossfeed kinda grows on you and it does help against listening fatigue.

Most people hear a slight collapse of the soundstage and less bass.

The one I've been using a lot is this one.

I stopped using it recently. It really seems to suck detail out and sometimes stereo seperation is not such a bad thing.

Bauer stereophonic-to-binaural DSP

I'd like a few others to give it a shot and see what they think of it.

That crossfeed plugin doesn't work with the latest version of foobar. Hopefully that other one posted up above does. OK, jut tested it and the one from Naive software works fine in latest version of foobar. It works well too.

I would rather not use it too but with some music you absolutely need crossfeed with headphones. Most newer music doesn't need it but I have some older music from the 60's that just sounds horrible without it. I have an album by AIR which is a fairly contemporary album and the first song on that album called Space Maker really needs it. The acoustic guitar sounds like it is way out in space in the left ear if you don't use crossfeed.

I respectfully disagree, as I'm using it with the latest version of foobar (v0.9.6.1) right now.

It's hard to disagree when I tried it twice just two days ago and it would cause foobar to come up with an error upon loading. My version of foobar is the same as yours but it is the portable version. Just tried it again to confirm and here is the error I get.

"Failed to load DLL: foo_dsp_bs2b.dll
Reason: This component is not compatible with this version of Windows and needs to be recompiled with a newer version of the foobar2000 SDK; please contact the author of this component to obtain an updated version of this component."

I guess it is because I am using Vista and you are using XP so it is Vista it is not compatible with and not foobar.

one advantage to having crossfeed on the amp... i just have to flip a switch for songs like that

Yea, I would like that option but only headphone amps with that I know of are Headroom and Meir and I use a tube amp which neither of those companies make. I can always press the mono button on my DAC though.
