The eggo effect?

Ugh, this is a horrible thread full of people bashing each other but that's understandable since the Eggos seem to be a phone which really polarize people. Personally, I love them, which came as a suprise to me because I read threads such as this one which painted them as mediocre. I'm glad I gave the Eggos a shot since they are currently my favorite phones--which suprises even me since I've put them against much more expensive and heralded cans. I've been having quite a bit of trouble finding phones I like more than these little guys.

I've tried almost every phone with low impedance (under 100 ohms or so) under $200 and I must say that to my ears the Eggos either beat or hold there own against all of them. An in depth analysis would take forever so I'll forgo that but I will just say that I prefer the Eggos to the sr225s (regardless of pads), CD1700, 240S, HFI-650 Trackmaster, Hp890, A900 and all the phones I've tried in the pricerange below these (below $100 and including almost everything except for the earcanal phones). I like the Eggos as much as the DT250-80, K271S and, here's the kicker, the CD3000!

The Eggos are a lot like CD3000s--similar sound signatures--the Eggos are a little less detailed and don't go quite as low in the bass as the CD3000s but they make up for their faults by providing a more pleasant, warmer tonal character that's never strident like the CD300s can be and provide a better soundstage (much better than the fake CD3000 soundstage which makes it sound like you're standing 5 feet from a band playing in a cave--too much reverb). Although I must say I didn't have a setup finetuned for the CD3000s (warm source, warm amp) I found the Eggos to be equal to them with what I had at the time (Revolution soundcard with a Meta42) whether amped or unamped.

You may notice that I have the HD600 and DT880 in my signature below well, unfortunately, they haven't arrived yet so I can't do a comparision between them. I also haven't been able to listen to my newely arrive Etys much yet so I can't compare them to those either. But if you haven't tried the D66 (or D77, if you can find them) Eggos yet I think you should give them a shot. I fell in love and am still in love with these cans--nothing I've tried can replicate their not-to-small-not-to-large-but-just-right soundstage and gorgeous midrange. Even for $100 I think they are a great bang-for-your-buck but get them used if you can--they normally go for $60-$70.

Love this post! Thanks for taking the time to post your unique and entertaining impressions. I've noticed that the eggos sound somwhat like the CD780s, and that the CD780s sound somewhat like the CD3000s, so it's not an implausible obervation.

I'm going to run back to my main rig and give a listen to my eggos! (BTW, FWIW, I loosened the headband on my eggos way back when so they are quite comfortable now, but it's obvious from the headband wires that you've got to do it with great care.)

I assume we're talking about the D66's more than any other Eggo model in these last few posts.

Eggos are superb at what they were designed for: use with portable equipment.

Thanks for the kind words Steve. I'll probably eat my own words someday once I get to try out the CD3000s on a better system but until then I stand by my opinion. I've yet to try the CD780 but I would really like to being that they are supposed to sound similar to the CD3000s and the Eggos.

It's really not too hard to figure out why Eggos aren't more heralded around here. For one they have really cruddy distribution (being that they aren't, officially, distrubuted outside of Japan--and maybe other parts of Asia, I dunno)--and most people don't even know that there are places besides Audiocubes that sell them (FYI Minidisco.com and Outwardsound.com also sell the eggos and have return policies). Besides that the D66 Eggos are one of the few respected phones in the $100 and below range that doesn't have bloated bass--this is significant because many people new to headphones start with other phones (like the V6, KSC-35, KSC-50, PortaPros, PX100, MX500, sr60 and, to some extent, the sr80--depending on the pads used) so then when they try the D66 they think they sound thin to their ears because they are not used to headphones without boomy bass. The D66 are slightly lean in the bass but if you think they are terribly bass light then I have bad new for you--you'll likely think the same about the CD3000, A900, 271S, DT250-80, and HFI-650 Trackmaster. All of these phones have bass that is only slightly more presant than with the D66 and, as is the case with the Trackmaster, even less bass. Not that there's anything wrong with big and bloaty bass (I can't wait to try the DT770 myself
tongue.gif
)--it take all kinds--but I've noticed that it always seems to be the people who love overpresent bass who dis the Eggos. Besides that, the D66 Eggos retail for $100 which scares many people off. It's my belief that if the Eggos retailed for around $60-$70 and were available from places like Headroom then they would have many more fans.

These are just my opinions. I happen to be an Eggo lover so I'll always be here to promote and defend them if need be. Oh yeah, and Superbaldguy (great name by the way
tongue.gif
) sorry for not being clear--it's pretty much accepted that when someone says Eggos they are talking about the D66.

at first i felt like they were oversized earbuds! the sound was sooo thin... but really the more i listened to them the more i love them

the attribute that makes them so damn pleasant and enjoyable is the LIQUID mids and airy soundstage... in fact i cant find any adjective to describe any other headphone quality more accurately than this for the eggos
600smile.gif

i love the thin, single-sided, detachable cord. ingenious.

if they had maybe 1.5dB to the low frequency for some bass weight, and perhaps .5-1dB to the midbass, they'd be the most sublime headphones i can imagine

I had my eggo D66 for a year now. I sold ER6 to fund the eggo and I have no regrets.

In the beginning I was disappointed that so many people say bad words on them. I don't care anymore.

I enjoyed listening to them 2am in my dead silent apartment. Yeah I enjoyed the bass too.

The isolation is poor. This is the only thing I hope it's better. But hey, as mentioned so many times, at this comfort/size/sound quality/weight/price combination eggo stands by its own class

About the D66 isolation, I guess it depends on where you're coming from. If you're used to canalphones the Eggos will certainly be poor in isolation. If you're used to KSC35 or earbuds they're an improvement, although not a huge one.

On thing the eggos have going for them is their rediculous sensitivity, you'll be able to have a higher volume while having the volume control lower on the unit itself. That sort of makes up for their isolation. The A500s have more isolation, but I haven't used any other "portable phones".

I've been considering the D66 Eggos... how do they compare to the ER-6s soundwise? I hear that they both have a thin-sounding low end... would adding any bass to an EQ have an effect?

My eggo's were my first major headphone purchase and I really like them. I think the phones improve the more you listen to them as well. I've had them for about a week now and I think they sound noticeably better now than when I got them.

I have a pair of Eggo D66 and I really like them, for cans in this price range they sound great. True they do have similar sound signature as the CD3K less harshness as heard by some people. I also have a pair of D77 which I also really like. They sound like the D66 but more detailed. Both can produce nice tight bass and the mids and highs are well represented. For cans that don't require an amp they are truly great sounding.

i feed D66s are much bright then D77, a bit more detail in the upper range as well.
but compare to D77, D66 lack low ends, i feel D77s have more balanced sound
