Denon AHD-950, Grado SR-60~80, Sony MV6, AKG K401, Sennheiser HD570, Sennheiser Orpheus HE-HEV90

I know it is alot to ask but could anyone here tell me of the above mentioned phones which one would be best at Ultra Heavy Metal, which by the way constitutes heavy, impactful and quick bass along side crisp guitar and vocal work.

I have a good quality sound card (crystal) and my polk audio speakers have ALOT of power output in the headphone jack. ( I don't know the exact output rating but it was enough to power my senns

) "leakage" doesn't really matter to me iether since I will be the only one around why listening to these phones and as I've said before I don't plan on using an amplifier (or portable).

Thank you so much!

That sounds to me like a job for the MDR-V6s. They are fast, tight, and impactful... and they don't need a dedicated amp. I use them when I demonstrate my system to people who listen to slipknot or korn or other such noisy bands.

scratch the 570 and 401 off your list. they're probably not right for the job.

Strange mix of can selections dont you think? From cheap to way way expensive, well the V6's are great, but while your at it go for the Orpheus (why not?).

If the orpheus sounds at all like other sennheiser headphones, I think it would not be his primary choice for rock. Anyway, why don't you buy the orpheus and I'll trade my V6s for it and we'll both be happier

If your inclusion of the Orpheus was not a joke, and you are planning on buying the Orpheus (!), you should have a VERY VERY VERY good system, one that is not based on a sound card and computer speakers. At 14,000 dollars retail, it is a little out of the ballpark compared to the rest of the stuff you are looking at. Even if you buy just the headphones, it will still set you back 5000 or more (I think), and the whole point of the headphones is that they are to be driven by the Orpheus. You need an amp to drive electrostatic phones. That said, if you are willing to put down the cash, they will probably sound fantastic. I don't know about with Ultra-Heavy Metal though -- certainly not the preference of the average person who would buy this amp. I will leave the rest of the recommendations to the experts, but I hear (from Headroom) that the Grado's are good for rock.
Best of luck.

No, it's not the BIG O, it's the Baby O.

Right? That, or it was a joke, or he wrote it when he was talking about something else.

*looks at him wierd, wondering if he really DOES have hte 12 Grand....*

Yeah, that baby Orpheus is a little out of place in the list.

Besides, the HEV-90 is the big orpheus, not the baby orpheus.

LOL! Yes the Orpheus was a joke! I guess it is the Sony MV6, Denon ahd, or grado SR 80s.... which one is the best? /me is really leaning toward the denon. Is there anything I should be concerned with?

that denon model is the top of the line so i would figure it would sound great. I think Gluegun can give you a better answer.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I am iether going to go with the Sony MV6 or the Denon AHD 950. If it helps with your recomendations here is what I'll be doing with these phones.

1. Listening to cds.
2. Listening to Mp3s and other compresable media.*

* A quick note about my mp3 needs.

I will be using these to analyse mp3s. I really really REALLY get involved with tweaking and enginerring the mp3s that I make. Probably more so than most people!! So what I really need is something that can reveal the mistakes and 'badness of quality' between different encodings of the same song with mp3. Because not all 128kbps enoding are the same and niether are all 320 and a 640k encodings are same iether! So I need acuracy more than anything with these phones. Which means that outside noise can't come in. This should not be a real problem because I'll be in my room and no noise will really be there in the first place, BUT I don't want anyone else late at night in other rooms to hear me(I've got thin walls). So that ruled out the grados.

Any way I need something that is accurate to the very lows and very accurate to the very Highs! I can hear 21khz tones by the way.

Thats why I'm still unsure. I've hear the Sonys are good at the deep end but I need to know about the top end as well. The Denons are said to be almost as good as the sonys at the low end (there both okay enough I suppose) but what about there TOP end as well. Oh well I hope someone can help me. I know you can.....
