Well my will isn't strong enough to fight off the 'I wonder' bug so... what amp would be clearly superior to the M-Audio Revo's built in jack?

I've already used a Maxed Out Meta42 and although extremely neutral, the Revo in comparison was exactly the same except for volume levels. So I have to assume that anything below that in the DIY food chain would also not provide anything beneficial in comparison to direct connection at low listening levels.

So where to head next? Gilmore? OTL MKII? UHC Signature? New source?

The source thing is an interesting idea but I know I'd have to go beyond the Music Hall CD25 level since the Revo bettered it in soundstage and detail. The CD25 did have slightly better dynamics and weight though. Anyway let me know what you think.

the revolution drives your DT880 with no amp?
i didn't know it works that way!
well..tubes ,maybe?. i went for EMP (ahhhh that's sweet, the beyers just feel at home), but i think that the Radii HAP-3 might be a good option, pricewize, plus i think the product quality is better now then before. try this thread:

EMP and HA-2 is what I can recommend without any reservation. Of course you'll lose the accuracy of your line-out signal. On the other hand you gain the wonderful euphony Head-Fi people are so enthusiastic about.

Anyone know where you can get the DT880s for a reasonable price? I've looked a Jan Meier's site (should have bought them when I purchased my amp

At last months Detroit Head-Fi meet, I listened to an astounding collection of amps with the 880's. They were excellent with the Emmeline solid state amp by Ray Samuels, and the Headroom Max. But I felt they truly were best with the tubed amps. Exceptional with the SinglePower Supra and its little brother, and simply astonishing with the ASL Twinhead Mk II, also widely know as the "CES ringer amp" that Jude owns.
I would already have ordered one of those myself, except that it appears that no one will offer any guarantee that a production amp will, or is even likely to match that "ringer" amp, and, more to the point, no one who has ordered one that I am aware of is satisfied.

Nightfall,

so which one did you prefer?

i see 'astounding', 'exceptional' & 'astonishing', but no clear winner..

if you were forced to choose one production model, which one would it be?

Anything less than ~$615 make the list?

Really can't justify spending more on my headphone amp than my speaker amp. Not yet anyway

EDIT:Reduced sarcasm figure to include HA-2
