I was not asking for a diagnosis, and no one gave a diagnosis (mainly just anecdotes and advice)... I was just asking for advice on what to do next, maybe from people who have had similar experiences. I know that I should see a doctor, but I'm not in a position to do so now, so I'm following some of the 'common-sense' advice given in the meanwhile.

Medical diagnoses? I didn't recall seeing anyone in the thread saying 'I am a M.D. and what you have is...' Most people will ask around when they feel a bit weird on their body, and most people who have been asked will respond with common sense answer (like 'go see a doctor', as so many here have did). If a person can't differentiate advice from his non-M.D. neighbor (or friend, parent, brother or sister) and medical diagnoses from a real doctor, there will be a problem. However, calling the advising neighbor an idiot just because he/she isn't a M.D. is not the smartest thing to do either.

Hi guys, I've been having this problem for a while.
My right ear canal is producing very hard, crusty ear wax in an area on the inside of the canal. The affected area is only about 2-3mm in diameter, and I am able to remove the crusty wax after taking a shower.
The wax reforms every night, and is there when I wake up. When it is present, it makes it painful to insert my IEMs.
Is it possible that I have an ear infection? Should I get some hydrogen peroxide to rinse my ears? Alternatively, is it possible that I could be having an allergic reaction to the buds on my IEM? (Unlikely, since my left ear canal is fine).

Also, I have been using the foam mod for my IEMs. These foams can get a bit dry and 'brittle'. Is there any way to reduce irritation from the foams?

Thanks.

Instead of posting such a gross and disgusting topic here, as it is indeed, why not going to see an ear doctor?...IMO you need professional help and nobody but a professional can help you. Please do yourself a favor, disregard all advices you have received here ,and do not play with your health, go and see an specialist...

Sorry to be so honest/rude but this is one of the most gross and disgusting topics I have ever read in head-fi, and I have read a few...what is next a picture of a chunk of earwax removed from your ear? It is pretty close to the PinkFloyd's one talking about his toilet experiences...

If anybody have/had a similar experience, IMO it should be embarrasing for them to admit it, as this is indeed not a very pleasant, at least that is my opinion in the subject. It is not a STD of course, but pretty disgusting, and personally I will be really careful, if I were one fo them, in not to talk about them in public...

Now I understand why people is so hesitant in taking headhones/earphones to meetings...

although I think ADD's response was a tad blunt with little tact involved I do agree to not play with your health. You have to ask yourself which you think is more important to you, doing well on your tests or the potential of going deaf. No one can tell you what your priorities are but I would hope your health would be first.

..and I thank you for telling me that. Could have specify in your first post and we won't have to make two more posts just for clarification.

I think our friend discombo is simply asking for shared experiences of iem . headphones usage and the physical effects it may occur among other headphone / iem users.

I do not see what is wrong or very stupid / silly about it.

In fact, I think he is just gathering info to see if he shares any of the common users' problems faced from historical records from a large and growing number of users which he can easily get access to with the internet.

I do not see a problem with that. And from what I read, we were advising him out of goodwill to cease headphone / iem usage till he sees a doctor for it.

isn't it?

Well, here's my shared experience: i've had IEM's compact ear wax before (simple fix is ear wax removal kit from drug store), but never heard of anything extreme as what OP is reporting... hence, I highly suggest you go see your doctor, even if it is finals time. The sooner you get it looked at, the sooner it can be fixed, and you can stop worrying about it during exams. Otherwise, stop sticking anything in your ears until you do go see a doctor.

To the OP, I think it's a legitimate question. Earwax is gross, but we ALL have it.

I use in-ears to study too. The noise reduction is great in a loud place and music can help(I don't like too quiet).

I would see a doctor and not use the iems for awhile.

The foam does get dry and brittle eventually, just replace it. Plus the plugs can get nasty with wax- keep 'em clean!

Jeez, this kind of fearmongering belongs on moveon, not here.

If it's bugging you, go see an ENT. If it's not then don't worry about it.

A bit ironic, making a clearly inappropriate political comment while stating that something that is not so evidently inappropriate as not belonging here.
