Hey I love you guys subway - its are so cool and high-tech. Those tram cars too (the newer white ones). As an ex-New Yorker, I was so jealous! But I'll tell you what: nobody in NYC would pay if there were no gaurds at the entrance!

Sorry, back to main point of the thread....

I use the NJB3 and Ety 4P often (although not in portable mode - too expensive) and I can tell you that they make an excellent combination.

They seriously compliment each other - the low noise and great headphone output of the Nomad really works well with the 4p.

Don't be too tempted to get the 4S - you can get the same result with an inexpensive cable and they don't sound as good directly from a portable source.

For those who are interested, another excellent partner to the Nomad Jukebox 3 is the fabulous Koss KSC-35's. The extra power available on the Nomad really does make them sing.

Buying from Headroom is a good idea. The fact you can return them if you don't like them is worth the extra cost from other online retailers.

As for the sound...I've said this many times before but just incase you have never read it...I'll say it again:

I own HP-1's and RS-1's and if I could only have one set of headphones...I would keep my Ety 4P's. I like the sound of the others more overall...but the Ety's for what they provide...are unbeatable. This is based on sound reproduction (micro/macro resolution, dynamics, extension, PRaT, linearity), price ($270 vs. at least double to even approach their qualities), ease of use (take them anywhere...except maybe outdoors unless one has a death wish) and the fact that they isolate!

Ety's the best all around phone in my opinion. Once they fix up the microphonics...they will be nigh perfect.

i use my 4p's + ipod everyday on NYC subway
any & every type of music
plugging the in your ears takes some getting used to, but it's worth it
the sound quality is worth the money

as far as getting an amp
with the isolation you get from the 4p's
you'll be able to listen at lower volumes
you might feel you don't need an amp

I wear the ER4Ps outside all the time. I just pretend I've gone deaf and have to use my eyes to lead the way

it's really an interesting experience to not be able to talk to anyone in public places. I smile a lot so people don't think I'm rude, and it all works out.

the worst part is when people have to poke me to get me to take them out of my ears...I really hate that

to second whats been said already: Go for the Ety 4p.

If you buy from HR, yes, they have a great return policy.
I have the Ety 4S, and LOVE them. no regrets, none, whatsoever.
The Ety's will also hold a high resale value, should you decide to get rid of them down the line. They are great headphones, and always in demand.

I'm not trying to knock the quality of the Shure and AT A900, I've never tried either. However, Etymotics are ALL that theyre cracked up to be. they are nothing short of amazing.

I wear them every day with my iPod on the NYC subway and it's awesome. You get used to not hearing anything else, tuning into people's body language. And walking around Manhattan with A Saucerful Of Secrets from Pink Floyd is a real trip!

You know, that's a good point. I think I would freak if I saw someone else with Ety's on. Funny thing about the ER-4's is that though they are probably the most expensive earphones you would see people wearing outside, unless you know what they are, they look pretty damn cheap and inconspicuous. And I like that about them. The iPod at least I can hide in my pocket.

Thanks a lot guys for your help. This was a tough decision originally but b/c of you guys I know exactly what I am going to do. I really have no problems with in earphones b/c I have tried almost everyone on the market from the koss plug to Shure E2C. I must say I am really looking forward to listing to some nice King Crimson or Pink Floyd threw these things. I just have one more question, what do you do with the phones when you have to talk to somebody, with the E2C's or Sony Ex 70's I just let them hang around my neck. Thanks for all your help.

No, would it have been worth it even if you got hit by the bus?
