Hey there guys, I am new to this forum, but had already read a lot of great information. So, let me start by saying thanks for all who post on this incredible forum.

I need help with my Melos Volume pot. The Noble one that is in there now is making "scratchy" sounds when I rotate the knob. I am planing on replacing it. I can get an Alps Black Beauty or a new Noble pot. Does anyone know which one I should get? Which one has the better sound?

Thanks for your time

The general feeling is the Alps is better than the Noble. FWIW, I personally would go with Alps.

Welcome to Headfi and sorry about your wallet!

BTW: have you try cleaning the Noble pot with contact cleaner?

I agree with puppyslugg. Definitely try cleaning/spraying out first. Alps Black Beauty Stepped Attenuator will fit without drilling should it come to that.

Remove the Noble and soak it overnight in 99% isopropyl alcohol. Lift it from solution in the morning and dunk it back in several times to eject the crud that has dissolved. Allow it plenty of drying time after draining.

Is there anyway to clean a pot without removing it from the amplifier?

I hope this isn't a really dumb question, but the pot of both of the Corda HA-1's I used to or currently own were slightly scratchy.

Anyway I can fix it without cracking open the case and taking off the pot.

This may not work, but you can try working the pot back and forth. That may clean the wipers.

My Volume pot (alps blue) on the HA-1 is scratchy to. I'm kinda un-impressed considering that these alps blue are said to be the best you can get.

The bests pot I know are:

1) Penny&Giles: around 1100$ only by special order (3 mounts wait)

2) Alps RK 50; around 550$ only by special order (aorund 2 mounts wait)

I know that these are very expensive, but you cannot imagine the quality, especially for those, like us, that use headphones...

Yeah, of every amplifier I've owned, the pots were scratchy.

Hi guys,

Thank you all for your feedback. I still haven't decided on what to do. I tried working the pot back and forth but it didn't work. Also I came across another "supposedly" good pot, the DACT attenuator. Does anyone have experience with this pot. People say it's very good.

Take care,

Funny though. I got the MAD Ear+ recently and the Alps Blue is an option that you can get to replace the stock pot. I didn't end up getting it put in though, and just got the stock one. I found that it had a little static, but not near as much as my alps blue. Perhaps, the alps is a little dirty or something.

CaiLube MCL (moving contact lubricant) can do wonders for a scratchy potentiometer...

I have taken the Noble pot apart on my SHA-1 and cleaned it without removing from the unit. There are some screws on the pot that can be removed and the contact surfaces can be accessed. I cleaned them with Kontak and the noise went away completely
