My receiver which is connected to the laptop with a toslink, shows the sample rate of any track, and it's always 48Khz.

This is also my understanding of the state of the S/PDIF output of any motherboard with a windows based systems, whether laptop or desktop. Even with desktops you need a soundcard that can do it. The motherboard native output has not been made to be bit perfect using S/PDIF no matter what PR Intel or other manufacturer assigns to their chip-sets. Now on the Mac side this is different.

This is the reason why the Pico and Predator are so in demand. They overcome this issue using USB. I prefer the Pico by design.

I was just to post a thread on the dv6000 s/pdif when I found this thread. I thought it might be optical, but I wasn't sure because I didn't see any light coming out.

The 48KHz issue is more bothersome, though. I'll have to look into that some more. It's easy enough to buy a mini toslink cable and see if I can hear any difference from USB.

The signal frequency indicator is a neat feature. I wish more dacs would have it.
