Any good headphones to reproduce the effect of a subwoofer?

Headphones with the impact of a subwoofer?

On a slightly more serious note, here's another vote for the Beyer DT770.

tell me about it..I listened to my headphones through that stupid jack for 6 months before i tried it in the headphone plug on the front of the tower..

Now, listening through the klipsch plug is like putting socks over my headphones..but i still do it when i play games b/c of the volume knob and you don't really need perfect reproduction in warcraft 3

Okay, writing this from college so I'll try to be short (yeah right, like that's gonna happen).

I own the Sennheiser HD580s for no other reason but the 125 bucks newegg was selling them at...I'm already planning on getting the DT770s and even when I was placing my order for the Sennheisers I was still just about 50/50 on the brand I wanted to go with and only the price made me go Sennheiser.

They already got damn good bass that goes down low (much more so when amped for some very obvious reasons) but I can't wait till the day when I get a hold of DT770s ... I don't "hate" highs or anything but I tend to prefer lows ... anyhow, if newegg still had the 125 buck pricetag on the HD580s I'd send you right there ... I love my cans and when it comes to sound positioning in games...yeah...anime? all great, DVDs sounding much better over fansubs and whatnot naturally but still. if you DO get the DT770s consider an amp ... you mention 200-300 dollars, then I'm not sure but let's say you get the DT770s at about 180, leaves you with about 120 bucks, save a bit more and go for the Creek OBH-11 or a custom built META-42 ... better yet build one yourself ... but that's something even I can't decide just yet. Some people will advice against the Creek OBH-11 with DT770s but it IS the most affordable commercial amp, please correct me if I'm wrong on that. JMT is famous for building great amps, pm him if you plan on getting a META-42. anyhow, when I first came around here in December I wasn't quite sure how important an amp was...well...it's VERY important with phones that are 250ohms or more.

Lastly, yeah run away from this place, I already got the HD580s and Koss PortaPros, plans involve DT770s and Eggos as well as a maxed out META-42 (I'm still not brave enought to build it myself so I think I'll end up paying JMT to make me a great unit).

Well, that wasn't as short as I had hoped

Good Luck ... oh yeah, welcome to head-fi, sorry about your wallet

How big and how much is a META42?

I'm thinking about getting a portable and a home set of headphones, but if the home set is so much, then I might have to wait a while to save up for it.

The D66 Eggos are still on my list of what to get, but I've been seeing many posts about how its bass isn't all that great. Does the bass still suck when driven by a small portable amp such as my Total Airhead?

How about portable headphones with good bass (tight but wholesome), good sound stage, good clarity, comfortable and light, not ugly, durable, does not need to be amped but can be amped properly by my Total Airhead? If I can't afford two headphones, then maybe I'll just get something that I can use both outside and at home.

If bass is a big concern to you, DO NOT get the eggos. There is less bass than my ER4-S. I would recommend the V6. That way, you don't really need to get an amp, and from what I read the V6 bass is as low as any headphone can go.

The HD600s through the blockhead have the deepest, most powerful, most overwhelmingly present bass I've ever heard.

The DT770s produce a really rumbling-deep bass but it lacks punch because it is colored and favors deep bass (below 60 hz) and upper bass (100 hz - 200 hz) more than midbass.

HD600s have an uncolored bottom end which is higher in quality and the drivers can take a hell of a lot of power and SPL. The DT770s suck if you listen VERY loudly because you have, seriously, like a 33% chance of getting a defective pair or a pair which rattles at modestly high volumes.

If you want SERIOUS bottom end, the DT770s are probably the only way to go given your price tag. Otherwise, I don't know what to say.

Cheers,
Geek

if you wanted to spend a while researching, you could build a cmoy pretty easily for 30 bucks

I'm using a jung multiloop topology amp (almost a meta42) w/ my dt770's
hmmm though, I still haven't noticed an inability for my cdp's to power them w/ or w/o amp.

no complaints here

That's if you already have, or can borrow a low watt soldering iron, some solder, a Volt/Ohm Meter etc. Ask around, i'm sure someone you know has that stuff you can borrow if you don't.

I'm running my 770s on a cmoy I made, no complaints. Just plan on going dual 9V if you want to stay under $30. If you have to buy tools, pick up a prebuilt used one instead.

If you want to check out headphones here in town, I have listed the hifi shops here in Ottawa and which phones they carry. I have ommitted Futureslop and such big box stores

Oz Enterprises - Sennheiser, AKG, Koss, Apex (www.ozenterprises.net)

(Omer@Oz will let you audition his demos for a week no questions asked if you want to bring the headphones home to check out) (I got some UR40s and AKG401s from him just last week) and you can trade them in for something new later...I highly recommend that you check out Oz first....

BTW...i find the Senn HD570s to be quite heavy in the bass...I think Omer has one for demo....

Steves Music - Beyerdynamics
Stereo Passion - Beyerdynamics (http://www.passionforsound.com/)
Audioshop - Grado Labs (www.audioshop.on.ca)
Bleekers - Sennheiser...(they dont have anything high end though...)

good luck

btw...how much did you pay for your headphone amp? if you dont mind me asking...Im sortof looking for one...(while I build my CMOY)

edit: forgot web address

Hi, Dwagun,

Cool, a Head-Fi member in Ottawa! I'm relatively a newbie at headphones and stuff, so I don't know the good places here in Ottawa, and thanks so much for the list of shops! Much appreciated.

I'll definitely check with Omer, but probably later on when I have better sources of music. Most of my stuff are MP3s right now, so I won't be able to test good cans effectively with them.

I like bass, but I don't consider myself a bass-head or a dum-bass. LOL Overwhelming bass destroys my enjoyment of highs and mids. I guess specifically, I'm looking for good "overall" phones that don't suck at bass, but it doesn't have to be the best bass or loudest (bass or not). I think my hearing is bad enough as it is.

What Sennheiser do they carry at Bleekers? Any portable ones like MX500 or PX200?

Doesn't anybody remember the speakers that Sony makes or made that you "wear"?

This gave you the "subwoofer effect" the poster requests.

What about the Philips HP890...from what ive heared, these offer amazing bass, more so than the DT770's and the Sony V6's (can anyone clarify) as well as really good mids and highs, all for £50-60, about $100

They are of a low impedence, 32ohms, so easily driven by your portable amp, and have a max input power of 1500mw, and 50mm driver units. They are apparently very comfortable, but they are abit big...oh, they come with a stand

You could give bleekers a call...although I dont think they have that much...they didnt even know what HD280s, 580s or 600s were.....well at least the one I called didnt.

If you're going to be listening to your MP3s with headphones that you're going to buy...why not audition the headphones with MP3s? Isnt that the logical way?

I mean if you're never going to be using your headphones for listening to 10000 dollar stereo system why bother auditioning them with the 10000 dollar stereo system. That's why Omer will let you bring home the Cans to listen to whatever you like and use them the way that you are going to be using the cans that you're going to buy.

let me put it another way...if you want a vehicle for offroading...you wouldnt test drive a hummer on a smooth oval race track would you? No, you would take it out into the bush to see if it was a good as a Land Rover or vice versa....same thing here...

I bought my Koss UR40s for work so I left them jacked into the CDROM at work for a week and listened to them at work...the box is still here in my cubicle. I borrowed the Senns and AKG to listen to at home so I brought those home and listened to movies and CDs on my Onkyo, music on my MD, and played MP3 and games on my SB Live...audition them

Trust me before you call bleekers to call Omer and see what he has in stock that he can lend you...(sadly his website doesnt list everything...) He has lent me speakers, receivers, cables, headphones, etc...with no obligation...

Regarding headphone amps, he can get the XCan V2, and rega ear headphone amps which sound amazing...again call him up or email him and ask him.

oh and did I mention his prices include the double tax...
smily_headphones1.gif
so what you see as price is what you pay...and what you get back if you decide to trade them in for something new or something better...

good luck
