Hi gang...

Need recommendations for the BEST portable CD player with line out. I have an old Sony D-335 (without a line out, only headphone out). It's great, but I want the best signal I can get.

Contact aos to purchase a Sostenuto PDAC (portable amp + DAC combo) and use with the optical out of your Sony.

for one that is truely portable (i.e. w/ antiskip) try to dig up an old d777 from sony. i use one for my office source and it has a very clear and dynamic line out--and the headphone out ain't too shabby either.

If you can find one.. a Sony D-303, D-515, D-311 is purported to have one of the better lineouts ever made...

Check this thread. If you look about 9-10 posts down the page for purk's post, he details his findings of better Line Outs and Headphone Outs.

Best of luck on your search for those players, though

I browsed a lot of PCDPs in Japan last week - I was under the impression that most high-end Panasonic & Sony models did not have line & optical out these days, but almost all of them have optical out and many also have a line out or have it combined with the optical socket. Anyone know if different models are produced just for Japan? It seems unlikely but unless that's the case all the research on what player to buy was wrong - I ended up with a D-EJ721 that I got as a refurb for around $50.

Yes.. Different models are produced for Japan, Europe, and the US, often with different colors for each region. IIRC, Japan and Europe both have line and optical outs, while the U.S. versions don't..

Japan also tends to have the cool colors.

Best line-out I've heard is Denon DCP-150. Very close is Sony D-303. Neither has anti-skip, and both eat batteries like candy (the Denon requires an external battery pack for best sound).
