UC Berkeley uses Grado!

Maybe they should give each student who checks out a pair of Grados a piece of paper that says, "If you like the sound of the headphones, please check out www.head-fi.org for more info."

Excellent idea.

I almost forgot, the other side would have to read, "Sorry in advance about your wallet!"

like jeftsang and lobstersan, and probably a few more headfiers, i have a personal stake in all this berkeley talk, since I'm a recent alum.

on the subject of headphones:
i plan on walking up to Doe on Sat or Sun and going into Morison to see what this whole grado talk is about. I graduated in 2001, and never had i seen anything remotely similar to a fine headphone anywhere near the library. i personally don't think its a good idea for open cans in a public space, since im faced with morons who ride BART (the Bay Area's rapid transit system) who use open cans and earbuds and annoy the living **** out of me. also, i think jeftsang mentioned that they were SR80s...those need to be amped!...well, they dont have to be, but they should! sigh

on the flip side, i do hope that people who see and use the Grados are introduced to the concept of great sounding headphones, and maybe even buy a pair. I myself am a Grado fan, but again, cant understand why they would be used in a library...even something like the Morison room...

now, as for the radical ******** that is Berkeley...there are some of us who dont participate in protests, get buck naked, vandalize our own campus to post inane mottos or slogans to advance a social cause....but, there are some students who do. i'm not going to rant about it here, but Berkeley really is a school and a town that supports liberal thought, especially pertaining to social issues, domestic and foreign.

but i can tell you, it can be damn annoying when youre stuck in a dorm your freshman year with a roommate who would do nothing but bitch and moan about a different cause each week. but hey, if people like that can make a difference and make the world a better place without interfering with others' lives or damaging others' property, gluck to them.

GO BEARS

Hey nanahachi. Sorry to tell you this, but Morrison library is closed on the weekends. I believe they're open until ten on the weekdays. When you go in you have to go to the front desk. For some reason you can't go upstairs to the listening area without checking out headphones and a cd, even if you've brought your own equipment. Oh yeah, don't forget to bring your cal id.

I really like the environment in Morrison library. It's very calm amd relaxed, plus they've got a pretty good selection of cd's and some decent cd players. The upstairs section is reserved for headphone listening only and is a good distance away from the readers. Only if you're listening at hearing impairing levels will the people in the rest of the library hear you.

They also have some rather large koss phones that looked pretty impressive. I assumed they were a closed design.

I think we have Senn 433s in the library. Very crappy-sounding headphones, though after getting some very weird stares after bringing my Grado pizza box to watch a movie I figured I might as well give up and use the ones they have there.

I understand that there are some pretty radical people over at Berkeley and that they're not the only ones. I hear from some other nocal UC people that the same BS goes on there but that the PRB (people's republic of berkeley) gets all the press.

I am going to refrain from comment on the political and social issues brought up in this thread. I would hope that others do the same, because this was posted in the headphone forum and I do not see why politics were brought into the topic in the first place. Yes, Berkeley has a reputation for being liberal. Make what you want of that. But please don't make blanket statements and judgements on issues in passing. It's like slapping someone in the face and then asking them how their day went.

Anyways... I'm going to have to go check out those SR-80's. I've spent a fair amount of time over at Morrison (being a music minor), but haven't noticed the Grados. Had I known I woulda auditioned them before taking the Senn plunge

. The number of music majors wearing crap headphones are pretty astounding. And the listening labs in the music library are pretty craptacular. They're currently building a huge new music library -- unfortunately I will probably be out of the country when it is completed

you are so right.

some inexpensive closed koss or even a low number sony cdXXX would suffice. those grados are going to get chewed up and spit out.

All jokes aside, LobsterSan and nanahachi are truly credits to the university. Sorry if the joke was taken wrong as I was just making a joke meant for those liberals and such at Berkeley, not at every student that attends.

Sorry for mixing you guys in with the reputation of Berkeley.

but wouldn't be nice if there was a primo listening room with a bunch of r10's and a huge library of music all around?

personal funding can only take your rig and music collection so far (unless you are rich beyond belief). it'd be amazing to see what could come together if there was a dedicated "listening library", with millions of dollars poured into its development.

i love you guys, group hug!

now lets go loot the library for grados and marantz/onkyo...CDPs!!

but really, maybe to repeat myself, despite how proper or improper it is for Grados to be in the libary (i find Grados quite comfortable), I am pleased by their presence and the fact that someone didnt want to provide crap headphones

lobster, we need to get joelongwood, hirsch, and the other grandpoobas together, and we'd have a damned fine listening library. and we could put it on Angel Island or on the Marin Headlands to add a nice view...

heh, i was just at the marin headlands for the first about an hour ago. we were doing a field study of the rocky intertidal zone over there for my invertebrate zoology class. that would be a really nice place to have a listening station... *drool*

we should lobby our congresspeople to put money into the listening library fund and divert it from ... oh... what do we really need roads and sewers for anyways?

Actually i'm pretty surprised at the negative comments this thread has been getting. I was excited that somebody in the school knew enough about good audio to buy a good pair of cans.

I think if you guys saw the environment and where the listenining area was, you'd agree that it's a nice place to relax and enjoy some music. They've got way more cd's than I'll ever afford to buy. The receptionist was telling me they take suggestions from the students into account when they purchase new cd's. Personally I think it's an awesome place to spend a break in between classes.

I wish the music library at UCSB was the same...I don't remember what they have there. Can you check out cd's and bring them home at UCB? We could do that at Middlebury, it was awesome. You could take out up to ten cd's at a time, and you could have them for two weeks. They had lots of good stuff too. I guess the benefit of a small liberal arts college is that not too many people stole the cd's...If they did, they could not get very far, surrounded by endless cow pastures and snow drifts as it was.
They had decent listening stuff too. Sony MDR-7506's and Sennheiser 400-somethings... The cd players were mostly sony I think, but in the listening rooms (only 4) they were pretty good. Adcom amps and Sony ES players.

edit: No wonder the tuition is going up to 38,000 dollars next year!!!!!!!Eep!!!
