Trying to get a Sig Other into Headphones
Feb 26, 2003 at 12:08 AM Post #16 of 19
I think the only people who will understand our hobby completely is other people in the hobby. Yes, it is generally common for this hobby to be male-oriented but thats just the way it is. It doesnt mean that there is no use trying to get females to understand the hobby. Regardless of gender, most people will not fully understand head-fi until they actually get into it themselves.

I agree with you Gallaine.. I think labeling females as being unable to understand head-fi at all regardless of our efforts is innacurate.

So Senn 580 and MG Head is the leading recommendation... What tubes are you using by the way?

Yea you cant go wrong with that match-up. Im using a raytheon windmill getter 5751 and 2-JJ El84's. The JJ's are pretty much known as the best, there really arent many EL84 competetors there. The 5751 is debatable. Most people like either the raytheon or the sylvania with gold pins.

You're right. I strongly and whole-heartedly disagree with Orpheus, but that is off-topic for this thread and I'll leave it be. I'll also apologize for getting off-topic in the first place.

In my experience the tube sound seems to be the one thing that impresses people not into this hobby. It was what made my wife take notice that something had changed in my system. In terms of affordability and performance I definitely agree that the MG Head/Senn. combo is the way to go. Stock it is pretty good but it is stellar IMO after about $50 in tubes (not bad considering that some NOS tubes go for $200 ea!).

What is it about the MGhead/Senn sound that impresses novices? The same that impresses "experts"? The smoothness, depth, soundstage? Note I have not heard this combo.

Thanks for everyone's comments so far.
