First UE11 Impressions
Sep 13, 2007 at 9:07 AM Post #346 of 1,600
I just had to re-state this, I think these UE-11's are really good.

I just can’t stop listening to them, I find myself listening more than ever before.

No other IEM that I have listened to has even come close to giving me this much enjoyment.

No, never.
This setup was meant to give me portable pleasure (And boy does it deliver), even if a full size Can was better, it would not be portable so that in itself would disqualify them.

So making open mouth impression (on wider ear canal) puts off the risk of having poor seal when listening... because you will be listening closed mouth, which makes your ear canal even tighter than it was during making impression/earphone. There is a risk however that the the impressions made with open mouth might be uncofmortable for closed mouth listening due to too much pressure on your ear canals, because your ear canals will have smaller diameter than they had during taking impressions/makind earphones, so you'd have to open your mouth (wider the ear canals) to release some pressure.

The difference between these two might be more important if you want to use earphones made from hard material (UE/Westone), less if you will use soft silicone customs (Sensa / ACS).

I had all my impressions done with my neutral mouth position... just sat there still... and both (hard) UM56, and soft) T2 fit perfectly, and I think the neutral mouth position would be the best choice to go... because you will spend most of the time in that position listening to the music... so why bother with extreme setups - full open / or hard-closed - if you won't be using your iems that way.

Make them this way, and insist on perfect fit...

Wish I read this before I went today to get my impressions for my UE11's...they had me keep my mouth open and then towards the end I closed my mouth and felt the pressure of the hardened molds...so I be ok? I was planning on mailing them off tomorrow.

I guess they promote open mouth, to be on a safe side... because of bussiness issues... and this way is just more cost-effective... and gives them less amount of "poor seal" returns for refit. Sort of extra safe way of doing moulds. I guess if they promote 'closed mouth impressions' there would be many more returns because of "poor seal" than the amount of returns that could happen during using open mouth impressions - because of the "too much pressure".

when i got my impressions for my UE-10 directly at the UE office, they kept my mouth open by biting into something they gave me. my UE-10's fit me just fine the first time, so if it works, i'd say UE should go with that approach... i find it a little harsh to say that they're doing it to save money from re-fits....

On the other hands I had all my impressions done closed mouth. Fits me just fine too. My friends has his Westone ES2 impressions done closed mouth. Also fit perfectly.

You might like it or not, but if you look what happens inside your ears when you open/close your mouth (explained earlier) there might be some sense in that kind of argumentation. UE/Shure and all other IEM manufacturers, wether you like it or not are a bussines companies not charity... and if you look the global amount of returns they might have.. this might be one of the factors. It's a great product, but you pay for it, they earn from it. C'est la vie. And refit for every single custom company means cost both in terms of material used and human work, so the open mouth policy might be a factor contributing to the amount of returns for refit they receive. I don't know. I don't work in UE, but I can see some common sense in my argumentation, that why I am writing this.

On the other hand there might be just two separate schools of doing impressions... some make open, some other closed mouth and both are right

I have no idea, really. Speculating.

If you think there are other factors contributing to open mouth policy then please just tell us.. looking at the length of the debate on this issue, doubts here and there, this is an interestic topic and all information is very welcome.

When I had my impressions done, the Audiologist didn’t have Bite Blocks and kept telling me I could close my mouth, but since UE has specific instructions on their Website to do an Open Mouth Impression, I ignored her and kept it open whole time.

I got a Perfect Fit on my UE-11 the first time, I must say I was very relieved!

I think they recommend open mouth impressions so that you won't lose the seal, even if your mouth is in an extreme open mouth position. Remember, these were designed for performing artists, and of course singers open their mouths while these things are in their ears!

The net impact is that if the fit is right you cannot break the seal no matter what gyrations your mouth gets into.

My fit is perfect, with an open mouth impression (unfortunately, no bite block available!)

Oh and of course they don't want to have to do refits -- why would they? For that matter, why would You? It has everything to do with customer satisfaction that customs fit you perfectly, with no hassles. Getting the fit right the first time just makes sense.

Surprisingly enough it's very competitive compared to fullsized headphones.

UE11 paired with Millett, I didn't really miss Fullsized headphone at all. This is very impressive.

Well I picked up my UE-11 pros today and am super impressed. Customs really move the IEM experience near to a full sized quality headphone.

My impressions were done at UE itself since they are about a 20 minute drive from my house. I did the bite block method, but my left ear has a pressure point at the Cavum of the ear. I think I will drop by on my way to work on Monday morning and see if they can adjust the shell a bit. Hopefully they can do it while I'm there so I can keep them that day to listen at work.

Oh yeah, about the sound.......did I mention they frikkin rock! Totally loving the high end transparency. The bass is pretty deep and I feel like I am getting a nicer tour of the whole spectrum of sound.

On the other hand, I still love my e500s as they have a very unique sound signature that sounds great with vocals. With these IEMs, its hard to lose.

I truly feel fortunate and blessed to be able to have a pair of this expensive IEM.

I'll post the custom artwork later when I find my camera....it was here somewhere.

Your signature shows the super micro and the tomahawk. Could you post some impressions about the synergy between the amps your 5.5 ipod with an LOD and the amps?

There is a lot more to headphones than BASS.

If you really want to hear BASS, purchase a $1000 speaker system; then you can achieve heart-murmur-inducing levels of bass, regardless of your source.

But compared to car (and to a lesser extent) home audio, portable bass isn't as easy to come by. Thus concern of those who've heard the bottom octave and like it.
