I have directly compared the following four players:

Philips 963sa
Sony SCD-C333es
Sony NS-500V
Denon DCM-370

Short answer:

SACD: The Philips and Sony 333 are tied for stereo SACD. The nod goes to the Philips because it can also do mult-channel SACD which the 333 cannot.

Redbook: The Philips definitely has the edge with upsampling on GOOD RECORDINGS. On poor recordings, the Sony's filters give it a slight edge.

The long answer: You will have to wait for my full length comparison after I return from a business trip this weekend

morphsci,

Thanks for the info. I'll wait for your full review but it seems like upgrading to the 963a from the 333ES is more of a lateral move for me as I don't really need multi-channel for headphones. Though it might just be the ticket for my HT setup.

That's exactly what I did. I had the 333 and 500v in my HT setup. The philips replaced both of those. I now have my 333 back in my headphone rig (as you said no need for multichannel there) and the 500V plays music and DVD's in the bedroom.

BTW the video on the Philips is much better than that on the Sony NS-500V.
