Lately I've been seeing these pop up over and over on here. Usually about how fantastic they are. They're only 99 shipped. How can this be?

Can anyone say what they are comparable to in terms of sound and quality.

They are a bit of a FOTM right now. People will be raving about them for the next two or three months, and then they will be considered overrated for an even longer period (which the K701 is just getting out of now), then they'll equalize (like some of the older stuff probably has, but I haven't been here long enough to know

).

I dont know, I just received mine from fullcompass (ordered monday) and though its only been an hour and they're supposed to improve with burn-in, I find them a bit Bass-shy and I wouldnt consider myself a basshead. It might just be the rap/hip hop that ive been listening to...

id say you should probably just do a search of the forum and checkout out the big "Eartools review" thread. Alot of comparisons as well as discussion on replacing the stock pads (a bit shallow though i like them) and reviews of the RP22x (more bass) and the RP15 (supra aural).

They are great for the money, but they are certainly not the greatest ever. Great for $99, but for me w/r/t closed cans under $400, Denon D2000 > Senn HD25-1 > Beyer DT770 > RP21. But the RP21 is terrific for $99, and is way better than, say, the Senn HD280.

How do they fare against the MS1s? Less brighter, more neutral but is the music experience w. them better?

Skylab:

Denon D2000 > Senn HD25-1 > Beyer DT770 > RP21

Ignoring price for a moment, if you were to put Darth Beyer V3 in that list, and D5000 if you have experience with them, where would they go?

D5000 > Darth Beyer V3 > D2000 > Senn HD25-1 > Beyer DT770 > RP21 ??

IMO: Darth Beyer V3 > D5000 > D2000 > Senn HD25-1 > Beyer DT770 > RP21.

The RP21 sounds very good. Some may be blowing their sound quality a little out of proportion because they are such a bargain. I like mine and I am keeping them. Nice and sturdy, good sound, and closed, which for me generally have more utility that open cans. But I don't think they are giant killers, that's all. For example, while the Denon D2000 is much more expensive at $350, for me it's head and shoulders above the RP21 (which for the price difference it SHOULD be). And for a portable closed can, the HD25-1's both sound better and isolate better, although they are less comfortable than the RP21's, and twice the price.

In both cases the RP21 is a better VALUE. But IMO, in neither case is it the better HEADPHONE. As always, YMMV.

Hey how do the HD-25-1 compare to AKG 271s and ES7?

I can't help there - have never heard either.
