New iMod for the iPod 5G: A Red Wine Audio/ALO Collaboration
May 27, 2007 at 6:16 AM Post #346 of 456
Ken so what is your opinion of the sonic differences of the 4g and 5g? Is the comparison with portable equip or better? Will you continue to sell the 4g and is it really worth the extra @ $190 or 35% more money?

Thanks

My only issue with the 5/5.5 version is that you can only get cables from one source

I think any ipod line out cable would work with the new Imod as
long as it has adequate capacitors inline as essentially the imod
is a reinterpretation of of the swenson mod for dvd/cd players.

In fact I'm sure that rolling different caps will enable people
to "tune" their Imods PIO caps, black gates, auricaps or
teflon injected with snake oil what ever the tweaker wants.

They can't be compared. Because one of them is an audio codec (FLAC), while the other one (WAV) is a container format.

Yeah I second that opinion. It would also be better if the dock was available without the cables hardwired to it. I'm sure for most of us, one type of cable is never enough. Certain types of genres of music require different type of cables to sound better and also some times your choice of cable is affected by your listening moods. Going by the current situation, we would have to purchase several dock cum cables if we want different sound signature which is not very economical to do so for people who are on a budget and for others who love to DIY.

The imod is not "economical" nor is much of any of this hobby for that matter. I make several types of imod cables and I don’t see the logic in making inferior anything, you pay for what you get in this case. Making something inferior in a cable just negates the whole purpose of the imod IMO.

Hey cpk,

I need a little more time to listen because it’s nowhere near burned on. However right off the bat the new video imod is audibly different for my fully burned in 4G. The bottom end is extended, less truncated and sustained. So yeah already I would say your 35% “better” is attained IMO. Moreover there is only 2 apple factory refurbished imods. I have the only 2 left in existence and apple no longer sells these refurbished, so that’s it. I do plan to have a few not apple refurbished 4g’s. These will be the thinner 20gig, non-photo ipods that I had Vinnie mod for me.

thx

What if some people prefer to use even higher end cables for their setup? I have seen people using Van Den Hul cables and Nordost cables as their mini interconnects. Whats going to happen? I am sure that they would definitely not be willing to give that up right?

I won’t say if it is better or worst. It just personal preference. Maybe you can make us a dock with 3.5mm jack with the BG solder in.

I will say unable to use own cable is pulling me towards 4th Gen imod rather than 5th Gen.

Ken what do you feel made the 5g sonically better than the 4g? Was it the dac or the cardas wire? Do you feel there is any mods that could be done on the current 4g imod that would enchance it now that you and Vinnie are advancing in your technology?

May 27, 2007 at 4:39 PM Post #357 of 456
How long will each run on a single battery charge? 4th gen vs. 5th gen?

This would make a big difference if is was much shorter on the 5th gen.

Assume lossless FLAC or whatever Apple's lossless format is?

yes; good idea! sell the dock with the caps installed, and we can do the cabling. even if you sell it for a premium (~50) it would be ok.
