Soundstage aside, I don't find the K340 dark... though by direct comparison to the MB Quarts they would give that impression. I think I would phrase it more that the MB Quarts are a little bright.

I played with different tubes and got the sound to be less dark and more detailed. I like it more now. ECC85 RFTand Siemens sound best with K340 in my amp. ECC85 Amperex that sounded so good with QP85 sound way too dark with K340, go figure.

Except for the casters and the huge price, those are my Ohms (well, one of my Ohms), the FRS-11. If you can find a pair in prime shape under $300 for the pair, grab 'em.

Oh and they make them not so far away from me.

Well they can produce bass you can feel, for sure, but overall the sound is pretty balanced.

I bought the pair for $25 in 1994 at a thrift store. I've spent about $150 maintaining them.

I've got the guts of a pair of L570's in need of new cabinets, you know, one of these days when my friend with the tablesaw has enough junk cleaned out of his workshop so i can actually get some slabs of 1" MDF onto it.

I got another pair MB Quart headphones. I am now a proud owner of QP15, it looks to be the top of their portable line from the same time as my QP85 and QP70. I got it on the cheap side so I am happy about it. The sound signature is very very similar to that of QP85 and QP70. QP70 have a more robust bass heavy signature with very detailed top end and QP85 have amazing sound stage and a tone of micro details. QP15 has a little less detail and a little less bass, but for a small cheap headphones they sound very nice. Drivers look to be around 35-40 mm and the pad size is 3.5". They are 50 Ohm, semi-open and are not cardomatic suspension. When I have time I will post a few pics.

today, preparing to say goodbye to my QP85 as I'm about to ship them off to WertherDVX, I finally did something I've been dying to do since I joined head-fi. I plugged them into my portable rig and walked down Kastanienallee (the main drag for hipsters in Berlin) with them on and as straight a face as I could manage. Were there snickers from the fashionistas? You bet. Stares of fear and awe from well-heeled cafe-goers? Oh yes. I even got a frown from a girl ostentatiously wearing some Philips HP460 as an accessory. An excellent seven minutes. Soundtrack: John Fahey.

Goodbye, Jecklins. You're going to a better place.

I have been thinking about this for sometime, so here it goes. Maybe it's a cockamamie idea so tell me if you think it is. What if something like Stax SR-X or Lambda driver would be transplanted into QP85?

Who would this monstrosity sound? Would it be horribly bass shy? Did anybody try to do this????

The Lambda driver would be too big I think but the SR-X drivers could be used. You have to fit them close to the ear and velour pads aren't an option or you will have bass hell.

I decided to cheat on MB and Stax and get myself Float 2 headphones. They are coming next week. I will be the lucky owner of 2 pair of Jecklin creations. I will do a full QP85 Vs Jecklin Float 2 comparison when I get them. The battle of the Jecklin's
