20 here.
Nobody knows how much I've spent on audio except my wallet, I believe its upwards of $5000. The money has come from nowhere else but my own workings, and I agree that money handed to people without appreciation of how hard it takes to earn a buck is a very very sad situation.
University + Head-fi + photography + girlfriend = bankrupt. No worries though, I've accepted an internship position with GE Energy for a year!

I deal with 14-18 year olds every day of the week and none (well, very few) could hold a candle to the way that many of you here debate, explain yourselves, and in general, communicate with the others on the board. I'm under the impression that, audio as a hobby, draws in those who are above average intelligence. This is a general observation and m not trying to stereotype, but I'm just pleased to see that 17, 16, heck even 14 year olds here are able to express themselves so well. The posts of most of the members that posted in this thread would better the communication skills of many adults in my area.
I guess Im an old man here at 26, but it gives me hope that the younger generation aren't all morons.

I agree with you. The forums on head-fi are the best I've ever seen, most forums I come across are pathetic, the conversation is rude immature incomprehensible and not worth the time. Head-fi however is full of civil, intelligent people who, for the most part have good things to say. I am often astonished when a head-fier reveals their actual age to be half or a third of what I predicted it would be. Sometimes a member who knows English as a second or third language will make my literacy skills look comparable to a cave man's.

Yep!
I tottaly agree with you too. I was kinda thrilled to read this thread, and I also did not believe that these members are that young! and to all of you Head-Fi youngsters: there is nothing to ashamed of your young age. I was blawn away to see the level of interests you have in, lets say, much deeper issues than most of the teenagers I've been knowing (of course, I say that as a compliment!)
ahhh... there's the next generation of Head-fi, and it is already here at its best..

Another "old man" here at 23 who is equally impressed by the signal to noise ratio of our young Padawans! It also just warps my mind to think of the kind of stuff some of you guys are enjoying at ages where I was mindlessly making out with Metallica blaring in the background.

The biggest "holy cow" for me has to be 003, never in a million years would I have though you to be under 18-20 years old!

thanks!

i think we should start team junior-fi. i've spent a good $2000 on audio gear. about $300 of that towards headphones (most of which i no longer own), and the majority to my home studio- for my band! (folk trio baby, double bass + harp + acoustic guitar!)

i fancy myself pretty mature for my young age (i'm 14). i don't think i've ever said my age here, because i'm going to guess that some people don't like taking advice from.. well, children. that's the main reason i don't post like a madman either, i generally don't give advice posts unless the user is brand new to the hobby, because i don't want to overstep my boundaries (for example, recommending a headphone that i've never heard before)

it's also pretty awkward when i'm shopping for gear. i call a guy on the phone.. "yeah, you've got the model i want." then i come in a few hours later, with my father (because my **** permit isn't valid for another 2 years in Kentucky. ugh.), who is a casual audiophile (who SOLD HIS QUAD ESL-63s WHEN I WAS LIKE, 6) <----- edited: actually, upon interrogating my father, i figured out that he bought them right after i was born and sold them before i went to kindergarten, so i guess i did hear 'em for a while..

then the guy gets confused because i'm the one talking to him about the product, and they look at me, then my dad, etc, as if he's mute and i talk for him... well, after a while they figure out i'm making the purchase (normally when i take my wallet out) and it gets a bit better. normally, after the transaction is over, i get a cute comment. "i'm sure the kids at school will be impressed!" "MAN, LOOK AT HIM, HE'S GOT GRADOS!"

also, i pay for everything myself. i'm self employed at the moment, because luckily my neighborhood is all 70+. i rake leaves, shovel snow, taste test delicious cookies, help grandmothers and grandfathers with their computers, etcetera. it's good money, during the winter, not as much, since you can't always count on the snow- but in the summer, i can get easily $1500 a month from mowing lawns. (about $50 a day on average)

however, most of my money can't go to headphones. we (my family) is sort of in a corner financially right now, so basically i'm not allowed to spend a lot of money. i'm stuck with my SR80s, because my dad thinks i will just sell whatever i buy again...

my other expensive interests? none, save a $7000 tuba (which i got for free anyways). i'm fine with my crappy computer and tv. i think pretty much the only thing i care about besides music is my schoolwork. i'd say friends but i pretty much only get along with a few people into the same music as me here, and i'm not that attracted to any girls here, but i'll spare you my life story!
wink.gif

once again, glad to know i'm not the only younggun here.

oh, one more thing, i didn't inherit my audiophile tendencies OR my music preferences from my dad. we just kinda figured out that i liked Jethro Tull, Yes, King Crimson etc when i started listening to them on his old Wharfedale speakers.

Well, I'm 19, and I have to say that I'm pretty surprised that even younger members than I have managed to spend so much more money! Man, I wouldn't have dreamed of spending that kind of cash on anything a few years ago. Even after spending the summer working and making quite a bit of money, I've been having a battle with myself to justify buying something like the Ultrasones that have caught my attention lately. I guess I'll have to, though, so I can catch up!

19, 20 in a few months

I currently just dropped a good amount of cash on a few ALO cables, a new Stax entery level system and another portable amp.

Currently in posession of a set of shure e500s and a total bithead, I probably should be saving for a car/college. . .but then my music won't sound as good right?

pfft

my wallet is hurting. Pretty much all of it was purchased with money saved during an internship with exception to a nice birthday present.
